100 years ago, on this day, at 7:08 am, Gertrude ‘Trudy’ Ederle entered the water near Cape Gris-Nez. At 9:40pm she walked out of the water at Kingsdown Beach as the first woman to swim the English Channel, beating the men's record by nearly two hours. #OnThisDay

The image is an oval monochrome photograph from a scrapbook showing Gertrude walking along the beach in the moments leading up to her historic swim. She is wearing a two-piece bathing suit and goggles. The photograph is annotated Miss Ederle starts (7-8 A.M)

It’s the time of year to be sharing this.

An infographic flow chart describing what to do if you find a baby bird. Some key points:
– if the baby bird is injured, remove it from danger and contact local wildlife rescue
– if it is featherless, you can find the nest, and the nest is undamaged, replace it in the nest and observe from a distance
– if it is featherless and you can’t find the nest or the nest is damaged, contact local wildlife rescue
– if it has lots of feathers, it’s normal for it to be on the ground, so look to see if the parents are around. If they are, and if they’re feeding the fledgling, then all good. If not, you can gently shoo the fledgling under cover and observe to see if the parents return.
– whether the baby bird is featherless or feathered, if the parents don’t return to feed it (or if a predator turns up and starts attacking it), contact local wildlife rescue

On International Women’s Day, I pay tribute to girls and women everywhere who continue to fight oppression with relentless strength, with unbreakable courage. This strength and courage live within all of us. The power is in us.

Can anyone explain the logic behind having to go through security during transit from an international flight? Have there been any cases of someone obtaining something illegal during the mad dash between the plane and the next gate? Asking for a friend

The voices of people seeking safety are missing from too much media coverage of this summer's racist attacks. Let's make sure Nabil is heard loud and clear.

A little while ago, my parents' cat Bridget went missing. As the weeks dragged on, they became extremely worried. My dad devised a way to distract himself: he began to paint Bridget's adventures, imagining her travelling through time and popping up in some of art and music's most iconic scenes.

Watching last episode of Vera on ITV. If I was her HR department, I think I would be concerned about her management style. Not much about staff development there
