🎶New display: Dover Choral Union 🎶 In 1913, Harry James Taylor, the first conductor of #Dover Choral Union, was presented with a "coming of age" souvenir book filled with concert programmes to celebrate his 21st year in that role.
A black-and-white ink illustration serving as a program cover from 1904 drawing from the Art Nouveau and Arts and Crafts design.
The central figure is a musician wearing long, flowing robes that drape down to her feet. She is playing a double horn instrument. She is framed by roses, thorny vines, and leaves.
There are two stylized, unfurling banners rest within the rose canopy above the female. The left banner reads "TRIENNIAL" and the right banner reads "MUSICAL FESTIVAL." At the very top, set inside a separate horizontal scroll border, the word "DOVER" is written in large, heavy, stylized block lettering. Either side of the central figure are the words "PROGRAMME" (on the left) and "4th MAY 1904" (on the right) written down the sides in an angled script. At the bottom of the vines is the monogram A.J.D 1904.

What better place than a museum to showcase beards on #WorldBeardDay. This neatly sculpted beard and gloriously styled moustache belongs to William Brooke, tenth Baron Cobham (1527-1597), a nobleman, diplomat, and most notably Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports and Constable of #Dover Castle.
The image is a portrait William Brooke, 10th Baron Cobham. He is facing slightly to his left while looking directly at the viewer. He has a trimmed brown beard, and a long slightly upward styled moustache. He is largely wearing black including, a flat black velvet hat and cloak, a large white pleated collar of the Order of the Garter around the neck, and a gold medallion on a thick blue ribbon. He is holding a golden coloured staff of office as Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports. In the right corner of the painting is a heraldic coat of arms.

A tail for #InternationalDogDay As Gertrude Ederle was being greased for her historic swim across the English Channel, a small dog leapt from her support tug boat and swam to shore. The dog then gladly drank from the can of lanolin used for greasing much to the amusement of the spectators on shore.

On 6th August 1926, at 7:08am Gertrude Ederle entered the water near Cape Gris-Nez. At 9:40pm she walked out of the water at Kingsdown Beach as the first woman to swim the English Channel. For the 100th anniversary of this achievement, an exhibition will be opening 6th of August at #Dover Museum.

An arrow for Cupid’s bow? This early #BronzeAge flint arrowhead was made by pressure flaking, a process of applying pressure using a pointed tool to pry off small flakes to create a precise point. Found in River #Dover by Douglas Welby, and features in his book The Kentish Village of River (1977).
A flint arrow head. There is a rounded central section at the base called the tang which was used to secure to the arrow shaft. The extended points on either side of the tang are called the barbs which prevented the arrow being dislodged from its target.

This #FindsFriday we wanted to highlight a new acquisition: two axe head mould halves dated to Middle #BronzeAge (c 1500-1200BC). The moulds cast a type of axe head known as a palstave. Discovered by metal detectors and acquired by #Dover Museum through @findsorguk.bsky.social . PAS ID: KENT-CDA99E
Two halves of a Bronze Age axe head mould laid side by side. The mould shows the shape of the axe head that would have been cast. The sides run parallel before flaring out to a curved cutting edge. The side flanges and central ridge in the mould create a shape in the axe head for hafting, which is the process of attaching the axe head firmly within a split in the haft (handle).

A warning from the past: if there is anything you would like to preserve long-term in good condition, please don't stick tape on it! As tape deteriorates, it can discolour, become brittle, lose its adhesive strength, and leave a residue stain. Enough to give an archivist nightmares! 👻

This exhibition at #dovermuseum was absolutely amazing. As a #dyslexic #neurodiverse person it was an absolute joy to see an interactive exhibition dedicated to #disability & #neurodiversity . It was inclusive both in topic and experience and really #dyslexic friendly!
