Then there are the private lawyers these guys’ families hire. A past Korean prime minister’s grandson is of one of Cornell’s accused—Winston Lee. Lee’s lawyer, Teny Geragos, helped clear Diddy on sex trafficking charges. Her dad, also a lawyer, kept Chris Brown out if jail for beating Rihanna.

“The Cornell Seven” moniker rings dissonant to my ear bc it’s reminiscent of “The Central Park Five,” who were exonerated. The two cases are not comparable. The Central Park Five were wrongfully arrested within days of the attack. It’s been 2 years and the Cornell frat bros haven’t been charged.

There are many levels of legal insulation at play in the cases at both Penn and Cornell. Often when there’s a drug bust, police will seize the “trap house” property because it was instrumental to the crime. But when a drug ring runs out of a frat, the alumni board owns the house so it’s shielded.

I understand that there are psychological mechanisms at play during hazing that can make it feel impossible to say no. But there is something maddening about how the law and public narratives treat the consent of a pledge rushing to gain status compared to, say, the consent of a drunk woman.

Wall Street Journal reported on a 2024 New Year’s Eve celebration where Ken Paxton partied in Dubai with two fugitives and a woman who wasn’t his wife www.wsj.com/politics/pol...
"As fireworks exploded over the Burj Khalifa skyscraper to welcome 2025, Paxton and his girlfriend Tracy Duhon watched from a luxury high-rise balcony full of people, according to a video of the gathering reviewed by The Wall Street Journal, details of which were contained in court filings and confirmed by people familiar with the matter.

Among those at the event with Texas’ top law-enforcement official were two Americans who had been indicted months before on federal healthcare-fraud charges but failed to return to the U.S., Anosh Ahmed and Sameer Suhail, according to the court records and people familiar with the matter. Ahmed, a healthcare executive, had donated $190,000 to Paxton, campaign finance records show, including $25,000 days after he was indicted."

Black text on white page that states:

When New Yorkers get ripped off, they should have the power to fight back.

We’re introducing the POWER Act to give workers, tenants, consumers, small businesses and nonprofits a legal pathway to take on unfair and deceptive business practices.

A tenant shouldn’t have to watch a landlord wrongfully withhold their security deposit. A consumer shouldn’t have to accept predatory loan terms. And New Yorkers shouldn’t have to rely on government alone to hold powerful corporations accountable.

We’re putting power back where it belongs: in the hands of New Yorkers.

Renee Good's family filed two lawsuits today. The first, against, USG, is a standard wrongful death. The second is a Klan Act lawsuit against Jonathan Ross, AND STEPHEN MILLER and Greg Bovino. It names Nick Shirley and Christopher Rufo as non-party co-conspirators for their racist propaganda.
44. At all relevant times, Defendants Ross, Miller, Noem, Lyons, Homan,
Bovino, and the John Doe Federal Agents acted under color of federal law and within the
scope of a joint enterprise with the private actors described below. Defendant
Lewandowski acted in part under color of federal law and in part, as alleged below, as a
private person, his federal status having been limited to a temporary part-time designation
that his conduct exceeded. Shirley, Rufo, and Ben Bergquam, and the other non-party
private actors described below, agreed to and in fact participated in the conspiracy alleged
here: each acted in concert with, and with the knowledge and encouragement of, federal
officials.

The math errors are far from the biggest problem with the piece—but they are telling about how author Michael Powell thinks. A symptom of bigotry is considering your feelings about a group more important than facts. Powell didn't seem to think accuracy was important for his argument..

I've been covering the death penalty in depth for a dozen years now, and few nights have been as disturbing and dispiriting as tonight. This was a moral, ethical, and legal failure on several different fronts from many different actors. It wasn't *just* SCOTUS, though they sure were a key part.

SCOTUS, over the liberals’ dissent, cleared the way for Tennessee to kill Christa Pike. The alarming order from DC was followed by even more disturbing developments in Tennessee.

I have seen the chart saying that people in the U.S. don't invite anyone over to dinner anymore. I would like to say that this may be empirically true. What is also true is that when people invite people over it's often the case that people flake out. So it creates a negative feedback loop.
