Today, Care Minister Stephen Kinnock has announced plans for a new framework for palliative and end-of-life care. The plans will look to provide more consistent high quality care, closer to home and with better out-of-hours support. Read our Chief Executive @jamescsanderson.bsky.social comment:
Blue writing on white background. Quote reads “Everyone deserves quality care in their final stages of life. Yet, too often, terminally ill people spend their last days relying on emergency services and dying on overcrowded hospitals wards. This can and must change.
Blue writing on white abckground. Reads: “This framework must deliver real, tangible change, particularly in reducing unnecessary hospital admissions and supporting us as the sector to ensure care is available where people want and need it. Once this framework is shared, action must be swift. We are ready to work with the Government to help shape this reform.
Blue writing on a white background reads:
“Our ecosystem for palliative and end-of-life care is part of the solution. Working together to deliver more specialist care in the community and in Sue Ryder Alongside Suites within hospitals, ensuring more people can die in the place of their choosing, with the dignity and support they deserve.” attributed to James Sanderson, Chief Executive Sue Ryder

We support today's call from @rcphysicians.bsky.social for a public campaign & national strategy for end-of-life care. Read the full comment from our CEO @jamescsanderson.bsky.social and hear about our proposal for a new ecosystem for palliative care on our website at sueryder.org/Call
Text reading "Around 8% of the people referred to our hospices die before they can be admitted, suggesting that referrals are made too late. Healthcare professionals should be thinking about how palliative care can benefit their patients from the moment they receive a terminal diagnosis, not just the last few days of their life." attributed to James Sanderson, Chief Executive, Sue Ryder

Today, MPs voted for the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill to progress to its next stage and for a full review of palliative & end-of-life care within a year - a vital step in ensuring everyone gets the care they need at the end of life. Our CEO @jamescsanderson.bsky.social comments:
Quote card with the words from James Sanderson, Chief Executive of Sue Ryder: “We all care about how and where we will die and this review is a vital step in making sure everyone gets the care they need at the end of their life."Quote from Chief Executive, James Sanderson: "Sue Ryder maintains a neutral position on assisted dying, but we are concerned that gaps in care could be leaving some people feeling it’s their only option."Quote from Sue Ryder Chief Executive, James Sanderson: "Our research found that 77% of people felt that terminally ill people could be forced to consider an assisted death because the end-of-life care they need isn’t available. That must change – no matter how the Bill progresses in its next stages through the House of Lords."Quote from Chief Executive, James Sanderson: "We are calling for the Government to back our plan for a new ecosystem for palliative care that would mean more people can die with the care and the dignity they deserve.”

2/2 We are pleased to see these discussions continuing, and as our Chief Executive @jamescsanderson.bsky.social explains, we want to work with the Government to establish new models of care that are fairly funded and can reach more people in need of palliative and end-of-life care.
Quote from Sue Ryder's Chief Executive, James Sanderson, which reads: "How palliative and end-of-life care is funded and delivered must be reviewed. While the recent capital investment for the sector was very much welcomed, it’s not a long-term solution to the funding challenges hospices across the UK face."Quote from Sue Ryder's Chief Executive, James Sanderson, which reads; ""Right now, hospice care isn’t available to everyone who needs it. But where it is available, it ensures people can die with the care and compassion they deserve. We want to work with Government to establish new models of care, that are fairly funded by the sector and Government. The NHS 10-Year Plan is a key opportunity to consider this."Quote from Sue Ryder's Chief Executive, James Sanderson, which reads: ""The NHS 10-Year Plan is a key opportunity to consider this. Sue Ryder is calling for dedicated spaces to provide hospice care within or alongside hospitals. These “Alongside Suites” would provide peaceful and dignified care for terminally ill people away from busy hospital wards. They would support wider NHS targets, provide excellent value to the Government and NHS through existing funding streams and reach more people who need expert palliative care.”

Our Back for a Moment campaign found that 83% of people think the nation is bad at talking about death and grief. We want to change this and encourage the nation to open up. Here are some things that bereaved people say are most helpful. Read more on our website: www.sueryder.org/grief-suppor...
Image shows two people underneath an umbrella when it's raining with the words 'Support bereaved people say is most helpful'.Image with text which reads: "Being invited to do things with friends or family. People generally really appreciate being asked to do things with friends or family, even if they may not always feel up to it. You could invite them to go on a walk, come round for a meal, or go to an event. If they don't want to socialise, you could suggest an exercise class or going to the cinema. Even if they are not read to do things at first, keep checking in with them because their feelings may change over time."Image with text which reads: "Receiving letters or cards from friends and family. Getting messages in writing from friends and family can provide comfort to someone who is bereaved. Let them know how sorry you are for their loss and that you are there if they want to talk. If you knew the person who has died, you could share a positive story, photo or memory of them. If you didn't, you might just say, "I know how much they meant to you.""Image with text which reads: "Being able to talk freely about what they were feeling. The biggest thing you can do for someone who is grieving is often simply to give them a chance to talk about how they feel. They could be going through a whole range of emotions - including shock, sadness, pain, anger, guilt and anxiety - or they may simply feel numb. Listen to them, be open to however they are feeling, and don't try to fix things. They may still need to talk about their grief months or years later, so make sure they know you'll be there if they need it.

Our Chief Executive @jamescsanderson.bsky.social responds to the news that more than 80% of healthcare costs in the final year of life are spent on hospitals, according to a new report from @mariecurieeolc.bsky.social, @nuffieldtrust.bsky.social sky.social, and The Health Economics Unit.
“This data shows a staggering imbalance between spending on end-of-life care in the community and hospitals. Around 80% of the care we provide is in the community, so we know that most people prefer to be at home at the end of their lives. Additionally, care in this setting is a more efficient way to support the increasing number of people who need end-of-life care."“However, we must also look at better ways to care for people at the end of life within hospitals. This would ensure the right care for all patients is available in all settings, reducing the current inequity of who is able to access end-of-life care.""We are calling on the Government to work with our sector to embed Sue Ryder ‘Alongside’ hospices on hospital grounds. This innovation would provide dying people admitted to hospital with the expert, compassionate care that families value so much from hospices. It would be a more cost-effective use of available funds and it would instantly free up beds in our stretched and crowded hospitals.”

Image of a quote from Sue Ryder Chief Executive, James Sanderson, which reads: "Reading the latest accounts of people dying alone and unnoticed in corridors is deeply concerning. This is not what any one of us would want for ourselves or for the people we love. "Currently 43% of people die in hospital, often because they have not been able to access the care they need from elsewhere. This forces them into hospital, adding further strain to the NHS."Image of a quote from Sue Ryder Chief Executive, James Sanderson, which reads: "Stories like those we are hearing about in this report are exactly why Sue Ryder has recently proposed a re-shaped palliative and end-of-life care system to the Government. Our proposals include specialist wards situated within hospital footprints with the sole aim of providing specialist and dignified care to people at the end of their life to directly tackle this issue."Image with a quote from Sue Ryder Chief Executive, James Sanderson, which reads: "The upcoming NHS 10-Year Plan is a timely opportunity for the Government to make the changes needed in order to provide people with the opportunity we all deserve, to live and die well.”
