During the assisted dying debate, most politicians agreed on one thing – palliative care reform is urgent. Patients and those of us who care for them are waiting, says Jane Turner, chief nurse at Sue Ryder

As Labour conference wraps up for 2026, we're reflecting on discussions we've heard and been part of over the last few days. We now need the Government to keep focused on the reforms needed to end-of-life care through the Modern Service Framework and social care reform.

📌 The Labour Party Conference. We're in Liverpool, talking to politicians about changes needed to palliative and end-of-life-care. We'll be making our voice heard, because no one should face death or grief alone.

“Bereavement can have a significant financial impact. Our research shows that 34% of people say their financial situation worsened following a bereavement, rising to 79% among those whose spouse or partner died." Thread 1/3

At a time when people are navigating heartbreak, practical challenges, and significant change in their lives, we hope employers will show care, compassion, and flexibility to support their employees in the best ways they can.” At the bottom, the text credits Leanne Creighton, Head of Policy, Campaigns and Public Affairs at Sue Ryder.

Our Chief Executive @jamescsanderson.bsky.social Sanderson has shared his thoughts with @hsj.co.uk on the challenges facing Integrated Care Boards as they are increasingly asked to prioritise palliative and end-of-life care amid growing financial pressures. www.hsj.co.uk/policy-and-r... (paywall)
A quote reads "Nearly 200,000 people across the country don’t get the palliative care they need. I’m worried that after seeing the scale of the challenges facing ICBs, this new guidance and the evidence exposing the gaps in care could be seen as a burden for the system rather than an enabler to support wider priorities. Taking more palliative care into the community must be the future of the sector. It offers a cost-effective way to reach more people who need us, and it is where most people want to be cared for.To ensure everyone receives the right care, in the right place, at the right time, stronger integration between these new community services and the palliative care sector will be essential." Our Chief Executive Officer @jamescsanderson.bsky.social has responded to Andy Burnham’s speech on social care this morning.
A white graphic with blue text from Sue Ryder. James Sanderson, chief executive at the palliative care and bereavement charity Sue Ryder, says:
“When people with terminal illness are stuck in hospital, they aren’t thinking about whether it’s social care or health care they need. They just need the system to put the care in place that is right for them.
“Too often the bureaucracy between health care and social care creates unnecessary delays. It means people die in busy, noisy hospital wards and corridors instead of being surrounded by the people they love, and in the place they most want to be - home.
“We welcome the Government’s announcement that they want to fix social care. And we are ready to support delivering the reforms needed so that people who are dying receive the end-of-life care they deserve.”

The gap between what constitutes healthcare and social care has been rightly identified by Baroness Casey as a very real issue that causes unnecessary pain and suffering for a great many people with a terminal illness and their families.
Leanne Creighton, Head of Policy, Campaigns and Public Affairs at Sue Ryder, says:
This divide between the NHS and council-led social care leads to people being passed from pillar to post, without the care and support they need to manage their symptoms and live their lives well. People facing the most challenging conditions, including dementia, are often the most punished as they are forced into a system of bureaucracy, rather than one that wraps care and support around them. This system is long overdue an overhaul so it can put people ahead of processes and respect ahead of red tape.
