It's good to belong to the first UK university to have the guts to walk away. But the point in this that all our universities and their sector groups did nothing to prevent or protest predatory AI companies from stealing *our* work stands. I'd like also to see bans on students sharing our work...

I went to the opticians and my prescription has not got worse. However, my eyesight is still really shit. Pitying things about slow focus, weak muscles holding the right one in place, dry eye, and indicators of raised cholesterol were said. Basically they shrugged.

Intrigued by the Fairford stuff which some local news sources are now more firmly suggesting was fuel siphoning. The 999 call complicates this, but it would be pretty funny if a few low-level crims from LDN decided to nick red diesel from one of the most securitized areas of farmland in the UK.

I am reserving judgement on Burnham's plans but the problem with the 'crap schools' idea is that in that case there must be just... so many of them! The data tell us that we have a very high proportion of unhappy children. Personally, a really high proportion of my school friendship group...

I’ve reached the point - well actually, I reached it a while ago - where I’m militantly anti-AI. Fine - use it in bioscience labs and radiology where it might help analyse data more effectively. Use it sparingly for systems engineering. Everywhere else, it can fuck off.

Helpful points from @jburnmurdoch.ft.com here on what AI solving big maths problems might mean for the future of the maths community www.ft.com/content/c947...
Many mathematicians are leaning "bad". few days after the OpenAI Navier-Stokes
announcement, a group of 25 winners of mathematics' prestigious Fields Medal published a letter arguing that the goals of the AI companies and the human
mathematics community are fundamentally misaligned. Their core position is that although solving complex technical problems has historically accompanied expansions in our understanding, the former was only ever a proxy for the latter. A brute-forced solution without the
deliberation and painstaking accumulation of human knowledge along the way is the signal of expanded understanding without the actual expanded understanding.Another big question is what this all means for the incentives to share progress towards new discoveries. It's not hard to see how the threat of being scooped by AI could exert a chilling effect on the culture of sharing important incremental findings or promising new avenues, which has underpinned scientific progress for centuries. And for the Al labs themselves,
the backlash over the Navier-Stokes case may mean future Al-powered breakthroughs are kept under wraps. If AI is amazingly capable at turning new theories into findings, but stifles the development and sharing of those theories, there may be a bumpy road ahead.

NEW Why holding a placard is a terrorist act, while causing disruption in a balaclava is not The mess caused by ministers and the police not taking terrorism law seriously By me at @prospectmagazine.co.uk www.prospectmagazine.co.uk/ideas/law/th...

Recent events in England now reveal the practical difference between terrorists and protesters. It would seem that terrorists peacefully hold placards and get immediately arrested, while protesters wear black uniforms and balaclavas and disrupt infrastructure and do not get arrested.

How did we get into this mess? How have we placed ourselves in the position where terrorism legislation is used to detain and prosecute peaceful protesters, while those adopting the terror tactics of private armies seem to be free to do as they wish?

The reason is that for some time British politicians have not taken terrorism legislation seriously, and that ministers have got into the habit of misusing terror laws for easy targets.

Peter Apps' book Homesick reminds us that it was part of the great council house plan of the 80s that the housing benefit bill would rise to cover increases private landlord costs. A certain Jeremy Corbyn pointed it out in Parliament. The Tories acknowledged it.
