Beyond the Pale Books @btpbooks.bsky.social have made available a Pdf of ‘Garvaghy: A community Under Siege’ published in 1999. It is highly recommended, esp for the NIO and PSNI to understand the community’s trauma and the extent of violence associated with past Orange Order marches in Portadown.

Garvaghy Road: There Are Not Two Sides. The mainstream media present the standoff on Garvaghy Road as a clash between 'two sides' and urge 'calm'. Here Eamonn McCann disputes the 'two communities' approach and explains why the Orange Order is a deeply sectarian organisation. Link to read in comment

Spent the afternoon with friends on the Garvaghy Road, listening to stories of local people’s grief and trauma from the last time around. This is no way to live. Love and solidarity, peace and progress to all. We have come so far. We are one society, one community. We cannot go back.

Great research. They were terrible times. Women everywhere faced indifference by the Pensions Board. Many lost their jobs and could not find other work. Single women had no entitlements by the state. Their heroic contributions ignored. My research on Country Antrim reveals a similar picture.

Driving home without realising there was about to be a march. Duh. Traffic chaos. Every bloody year the roads are taken over by endless marching bands either ‘practicing’ or parading where they are not wanted. And the bonfires get higher. Loathe this time of year.
