you should feel uncomfortable with frontier AI models not because the tools lack uses but because everyone who works in hyperscale AI wants to worship these machines and every algorithm that behaves unexpectedly is an enfant terrible they admire, love, and hope to have care for them in their dotage

The "120m barrels of diesel over the next 6 months" figure seems widespread. EU held 39 million tonnes (286m barrels) of gas/diesel oil in May as reserves in case of supply disruption. It's meant to be enough for 90 days. Trump wants 42% released over the winter to keep US diesel prices down.

There are only 3 possible paths: Continue as-is forever; Force the parade through; Secretary of State on public safety grounds either prohibits the parade, or amends/revokes the Parades Commission determination. None are good, and all because the PSNI and the PC will not admit they made an error

The only* important questions around Drumcree and the Garcaghy road are: Who within the PSNI assessed there would be no disorder if the march went ahead? Who was in the chain of command that approved this assessment? Did the Parades Commission correctly interpret the assessment?

New New Labour have shown themselves clueless about Northern Ireland. I wonder if Mr Bryant realises he’ll almost certainly be doing direct rule, probably for years, because power sharing will collapse? Stormont desperately needs reform, but there’s little appetite among politicians for that

We can simulate fish schools or ants in ways that solve complex problems (gradient detection, bridge building, nest selection) but no one would create this weird soul/no-soul dichotomy to argue they these that multi-agent swarms of extremely simple rules are “thinking”.

One step closer to defining them as publishers rather than nebulous “platforms” which I reckon would solve the vast majority of problems they cause – rather than the “give them all your data including official ID” plans that govts seem keen on (cos that’s what these “platforms” actually want)

And the Irish digital state ID wallet requires you to have a valid MyGov account, which in turn requires you to submit information that the DPC has ruled to be illegal !! So its going to be interesting to square that circle

I’ve just tonight learned that Ireland has an invasive shrew from France/Spain that was first identified here in 2008. I’ve also leaned that the Pygmy Shrew it’s displacing is likely not native either, probably brought here (intentionally or otherwise) by early colonisers several thousand years ago

A campaign for *MSF* to be banned as a terrorist group (on the paper thin basis of claims about 2 past employees) is the product of the UK Govt being willing to divorce any meaningful conception of societal threat from its use of proscription powers. Govt needs to wake up to the madness of this:

The reason why people think Dolly was “politically neutral” is because they don’t understand being political as a series of actions born of commitment to an idea. Being political as defined by the pundit class is to be in front of a microphone delivering sound bytes, it’s something to be devoured

Pilot pulls off Count Binface stunt for Clacton byelection
Plane spends 30 minutes off the Essex coast marking out shape of a bin in apparent tribute to Nigel Farage’s rival A pilot has traced the shape of a bin with their flight path near Clacton before Count Binface challenges Nigel Farage in a byelection on Thursday. The light aircraft spent around half an hour between 2,100ft and 4,150ft above the sea near the Essex coastal town zigzagging to mark out the shape of a bin, according to data from Flightradar24. Oof. Google told Henk van Ess "if someone is unsure about an image, they can ask the Gemini app or use Lens in Search to see if the image was Al-generated." That works if I upload the original screenshot, but not if I crop out the TEXT THAT SAYS IT'S AI. (Funny with the crop it thinks this is Iran)
Screenshot of Google Images AI mode saying the AI image is AI because of "interface artefacts", literally text that says "experimental" and a "create image button". The button for control prompts is also visible, so Google picks up on that. Screenshot of Google Images AI mode on the altered image, in which I very crappily cut out the text that triggered it last time, and this time AI Mode says it's a satellite image showing destruction of military aircraft in Shiraz, Iran, with no mention that the image was made by Google's own AI.

Irish media outlets just tell us what a thing is challenge: impossible A bomb in a car is not necessarily a car bomb. A bomb designed to be attached to a car is very different to a 1,000 pound device carried in a car. My favourite pointless phrase in this is “portable car bomb”

The hosepipe “ban” is a perfect illustration of who Irish officialdom works for. You can’t water your own garden or wash your own car, but if you can afford to pay someone else to do it, not a problem. Business and the comfortable classes will not be inconvenienced, only the little people
