Of the 61st, Devoy later recalled: "It was supposed to be an English Regiment but there were not one hundred men in it who were not Irish, and there were 600 Fenians. It was the banner Fenian regiment." Amongst this lot of course was Robert Cranston of Catalpa-fame

It was moving to think of the rich Fenian history of the Barracks while walking the grounds afterwards - In 1866 when John Devoy and others devised a plan to seize Dublin, they anticipated a central role for the Irish soldiers serving here, particularly in the 61st Regiment

An incredible day yesterday, spent with a major U.S. collector of stereoscopy who is downsizing. He has generously donated four full travel sets of Irish stereoviews (totalling 400 images), plus c100 more, to University College Dublin. These are extraordinary photos, dating from the 1880s-1900s.
