Overriding local decisions that allow for more housing supply makes zero sense. Watching a conservative government add heavy regulation to free-market housing supply is simply mind-boggling.

Why do people get mad at new apartments for being expensive, but are totally fine with the city creating entire mansion-only neighborhoods? If you think an expensive apartment isn't helping you, a poor renter, that can only be more true for a $10 million mansion.

This is an excellent article by Leif Wetherby - why AI is a cultural technology not a collection of human-like agents (citing our work on this). And why the anthropomorphism is a distraction from the very real risks and dangers and the way to deal with them. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/01/o...

imo if Trudeau era housing policy was actually able to keep pace with population growth, it would have been fine, but basically Trudeau era policy soured a lot of Canadians on the current immigration system (and even the Canadian reddits show this)

I have a confession to make. The townhomes I & others spent most of a decade trying to legalize are popping up all over Oregon & elsewhere...and I love that...but they're a problem in one big way. (get ready for a twisty thread about the housing report @sightline.org just published)

bizarre to me that so much reporting on housing fails to interrogate the assumptions that homeowners (1) should always get to approve of changes to their neighbourhood (2) should be protected by government from any possible decline in property values www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

This talk about "alignment" shows that the companies don't take the risks seriously. They basically say that they must be allowed to develop massive autonomous technologies with no restrictions whatsoever, and then pretend that they're working on making those technologies "nice persons".

All the "alignment" rhetoric places the problem inside the "AI", seen as an anthropomorphised moral person, but obviously the problem is outside: it is with what we allow these algorithms to interfere with.

Letting kids play with the red button is dangerous. But it's not because kids are so much smarter than adults. The point is not to prevent AI to get "too smart", but to have strict barriers in place. An LLM did not figure out how to send requests over internet: an engineer implemented the feature.

Interesting quick take on NIMBYism and populism. I’ve thought before about how prices are the main way we experience the housing shortage, so people think that we can just fix the prices and the housing problem is fixed.

the core of what I think about "intelligence" is that you CAN'T and won't have something meaningfully described as "intelligence" without a rich, independent, evolving goal structure, which is (part of) why the paperclip optimizer framing is so boneheaded

I just continuously want to emphasize how underrated Edmonton is on housing. They are growing way faster than the three largest cities, so very high demand, but they build enough to keep rents down. See chart of two bedroom rents across the country www150.statcan.gc.ca/n1/daily-quo...
