Mostly I am grumpy because since Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones were so popular, it's gotten a lot harder to find not miserable television to watch. Studios are trending towards making the same thing again and again, it made a lot of money once so they don't need anything different anymore ever

I mean, there's always a place for relentless misery, but I absolutely resent the implication from lists like this that joyful media isn't good. There's so many people that enjoy so many different things, and it's so frustrating that a top 100 shows list doesn't have more variety on it.

There's a depressing lack of science fiction and fantasy on that list. I refuse to believe that Louie is better than any Star Treks, for example, and I refuse to believe that only the most miserable and relentlessly depressing genre TV belongs there. Also where is Murderbot, it should be there

I've got those little Lego plant friends on my desk at work, and the last two weeks I have come in after the weekend to them moved so it looks like they have had a fight.
Two little smiling Lego planters, one yellow and one blue, are sitting on a monitor base, holding hands and looking at the camera. This is their usual placement on the desk. The scene that greeted me at the start of last week. The yellow planter on the right is in the same place, but the blue planter on the left has been moved several centimetres away and has been turned 90° clockwise so his back is turned on his friend. It looks like they have had a fight. The scene that greeted me this morning. It's similar to last week, but the blue planter has been moved even further away and has been turned around so his back is turned to the camera.

What you need to understand is nothing we built was “off the shelf.” Store-bought environmental assets for stop-motion features do not exist. We were given concept art and told “make it look like this.” Everything you see here, down to the dirt and moss, was meticulously designed and crafted.

We usually only do special orders from Ingram, so while we might special order the wrong book by mistake, we likely wouldn't have knock offs on the shelf. I'd highly recommend ordering things from a local independent bookshop, or from bookshop.org which seems to have fewer scam versions

The ordering system in the bookstore I work at only lets us order from legitimate suppliers like Penguin Random House, Hachette, and the like. The one exception is that we can also order from Ingram, which is notorious in our store for selling knockoff garbage.

It's not like they have been held responsible for any of the other bubbles they've instigated. I wouldn't be surprised if they're trying to get some sort of bailout lined up though, all "Oh no we accidentally made the murder computers and have to shut down our business, how will we survive now"
010
Dana S @mapperbee.bsky.social · 09/09/2026
I'm at the point where I can't tell if the people at these companies believe this garbage, or if they're trying to get the masses to blame the computers for all of the layoffs and the climate disasters triggered by data centers. "It's the computer's fault we scammed billions out of the economy."

An LLM isn't on track for mass murder on its own, it isn't on track for super intelligence. It doesn't know the meaning of the words it spits out, you sponge-brained invertebrates! It has statistics about what words appear together and that's it! It's not going to be your sapiosexual girlfriend!

It's amazing to see the number of people who can't tell fact from fiction regarding genAI. The people building it should be able to tell that a predictive text model isn't intelligent and can't trigger a nuclear apocalypse, but I guess they thought that The Terminator was a documentary.
110
Dana S @mapperbee.bsky.social · 09/09/2026
Sure, genAI systems probably are going to be devastating to humanity, because the dipshits pushing them are gunning for total economic and environmental collapse. Their statistical models are not going to launch all the nukes like in the movies, and only complete simpletons believe that.

Well, instead of logging everything properly, they got a couple of tree crushers and started rolling over the trees, and then started flooding the reservoir before they got all the machinery out. There's so much dead driftwood in the reservoir that I'm surprised no one saw something like this sooner

Getting a man killed so his job is available is literally a thing that happens during purges. The competence of those killed during purges has never once mattered. The fact that they had something that someone else wanted is usually what instigates the killing in the first place.

People have tried to do research into this, and dug into existing literature and found a complete lack of data. In fact, our understanding is likely completely wrong. I know doctors who recommend older patients keep weight on because they are MORE likely to survive a health crisis than thin patients
