When the Russians threaten others with a nuclear response, it's a tell. It shows what they fear. So they have identified a great vulnerability over the possible loss of Kaliningrad.

I'm going to guess the new US-Greenland agreement is the same as the old US-Greenland agreement but with cosmetic changes and a new, gold-encrusted name.

Just what we don't need. American-style massive donations to UK politics. "Nobody can be comfortable about the prospect of the super rich effectively buying and selling British politics". - Paul Nowak, the general secretary of the Trades Union Congress. Agreed. Subversive of our democracy.

Astrophotographer Adam (AJ) Smadi caught this image a few hours ago from Washington state. A thin crescent Moon, sunlight illuminating the rugged lunar surface. And 2,400 times farther away—and on the other side of the Sun—mighty Jupiter, and its moons Io (left) and Ganymede (right).
A crescent Moon seen during the day, arcing from upper left to lower right of the frame. At lower centre is the full disk of Jupiter; the small dots to its upper left and lower right and Io and Ganymede, respectively.

For #AdoorableThursday, the door to the famous stairs leading to the Chapter House in Wells Cathedral. Often overlooked but standing guard not just to the stairs but also - at the time of my visit - a blue dragon!
A wide staircase on the left which turns to the right at the top. This is the entrance to the Chapter House which is not visible in this photograph. On the right, a wooden door with decorative carving at the top.The vaulting of the ceiling of Wells Cathedral Chapter House. A central pillar rising to the main vaulting has a colourful, mostly blue, dragon curled around it. The dragon's head is at the top with mouth open. At the rear are decorative windows.

#AdoorableThursday #IronworkThursday Super heavy 13th C oak doors from Gannat in the Auvergne, central France, now in V&A London. Decorative + protective, ironwork was costly in medieval period, so from an important building. Later keyhole + handle show that door was used upside down at some point.
From V&A web article:
The iron straps and hinges have been elaborately wrought by hand, heating and hammering the metal into crescents, scrolls and flowers, which not only make the door beautiful, but also hold the panels of wood together.

These doors, which are 2.6 metres high and 12 centimetres thick, are likely to have come from an important building. Iron was expensive during the 13th century and is also heavy, so its selective use on wooden doors and chests provided extra security and a nice decorative flourish, without making the door too heavy to be practical.

1632 years ago, on the 24th of August 394, Nesmeterakhem carved an inscription in Egyptian hieroglyphs and demotic script along an image of the god Mandulis in the temple of Philae. It is the last known ancient Egyptian inscription in Egyptian hieroglyphs. #otd #history 🗃️
A crude drawing of the god Mandulis from Hadrian's Gate at Philae, accompanied by a hieroglyphic inscription (above right) and a demotic inscription (lower right). The hieroglyphic text is the last one written in ancient times, and its author had a weak grasp of the writing system. The demotic inscription reads: "I, Nesmeterakhem, the Scribe of the House of Writings (?) of Isis, son of Nesmeterpanakhet the Second Priest of Isis, and his mother Eseweret, I performed work on this figure of Mandulis for all time, because he is fair of face towards me. Today, the Birthday of Osiris, his dedication feast, year 110 [of the reign of Diocletian]." The date is thus 24 August, 394 AD/CE. The hieroglyphic text says: "Before Mandulis son of Horus, by the hand of Nesmeterakhem, son of Nesmeter, the Second Priest of Isis, for all time and eternity. Words spoken by Mandulis, Lord of the Abaton, great god." (Source: Richard Parkinson, Cracking Codes: The Rosetta Stone and Decipherment (1999), p. 178.)

The fact that Trump has reduced the US-Canada relationship to a zero-sum competition in the eyes of his supporters is in itself a catastrophic development. The relationship always thrived because it was seen from a mutually beneficial point of view. That’s now over and it’s a tragedy.
