I was able to temporarily pick up most of the consonant mappings and some vowel mappings and hold them in my head enough to have a couple conversations but it wasn't a skill I practiced

I still think this is the most serious actual xrisk style issue in the AI space, and that nothing else comes remotely close for second place.

feels like the core thing here is either one uses "private equity" to mean equity that is private (which is quite common and often innocuous or one uses it to mean, specifically, "PE firms", and one gets to talk about their bad playbook can't do both

I'm pretty pleased with how we did, considering the poor luck, though of course more redundancy would be nice.

an additional thing I didn't include in the post: of the six people who participated in the response, one was paged awake in the middle of the night, one was on leave, one was pretty sick and tired, and it was 3am for me 🙃🙃 (I wasn't paged but I was about to go to bed at 1 when I saw the emails)

⚠️ A few hours ago, a malicious crate was discovered on crates.io which spread as a dependency of `arrayref` and some other crates, likely due to compromised credentials. The affected versions have been deleted. For details and how to see if you are impacted, see: blog.rust-lang.org/2026/08/20/s...

Manish @manishearth.bsky.social · 27/06/2026
I don't? I didn't write that post. I think it's just a sophisticated targeted scam. It's easy for people to think that sophisticated scams are nation state attacks because they're so rare and expensive, but that's changing (see the blog post of mine that I quoted)

in the case of this recent scam we don't know for sure if the calls were deepfaked. hard to understand German accent is one way to mask deepfake artifacts though

Manish @manishearth.bsky.social · 26/06/2026
My post actually referenced a scam in Hong Kong where an employee was duped by a deepfaked video call with higher ups. I think it's definitely been feasible for a while, though not necessarily very airtight.

like, i did not expect sophisticated interview scams to already be a thing, they were just an example of something that *could* be a thing that would be good at catching tech-savvy people with their guard down. turns out they're real? or becoming real?
