@femlfm.bsky.social Hi Lisa. Just a little update in case you thought I'd died on you. They've prescribed me an opioid for pain relief, which turns out to disagree with me violently and colourfully. So the advice was right: kids, don't mess with hard drugs...😧

Brexit ‘no mates’ Britain still sitting in a sulk outside the room because yet another prime minister doesn’t have the courage to say how geopolitically insane and economically illiterate this is. Or admit the lies they’ve all told about immigration and freedom of movement. What failure.

Nobody seems to get this. It's from the 1970s Andre Previn: You're playing all the wrong notes! Eric( hoisting Previn up by the lapels): No. I am playing all the right notes. But not necessarily in the right order!

Albert King's Born Under A Bad Sign has the refrain " If it wasn't for bad luck, I wouldn't have no luck at all". Looking at the papers lately, does anyone else feel like replacing "luck" with "news" throughout? 🤔🙄

I got savaged by a puppy today on the way home from the shops. It was a tiny black smudge on the end of a 30ft extendable lead. After a brief hump of my shin it ran around me until my legs were tied together with its lead. It's owner had to run around me in the opposite direction to free me! 🥰

Commentary about the performative “grief” being demanded of us all, written by Stone Erickson Mims, a Black man I do not know personally. It was passed on to me. I’m passing it on without comment. None is necessary.
A post passed on to me by Stone Erickson Mims: “In the matter of Charlie Kirk, I cannot mourn on behalf of a man that has made statements such as “empathy is woke" or that "gun violence is worth it to maintain our second amendments rights" in context to mass shootings and school shootings.

I cannot, as a Black man, mourn for a man who has, at every avenue, spewed racist filth in order to cast hundreds of thousands of people who share my hue, in a bigoted light.

To mourn a man such as this would be a moral betrayal to the children killed in the hallways of their schools and the 14 percent, the darker Americans, that he blamed for civil unrest.

I cannot mourn for a man who refused to extend that same mercy to George Floyd. Some say that he only spoke words—-that he was merely demonstrating his first amendment rights. But how many bigots felt empowered by those words? How many Proud Boys, how many Klanophiles saw him as their beacon?

I cannot, as a writer, an advocate of language, pretend that his rhetoric did not contribute to the nullification of millions of people's safety and agency.
Words *are* violence. Every war, after all, begins with a manifesto, every act of hate fueled by a corresponding propaganda piece.

A man died today—-but do not ask that those of us who he spent his life discriminating against to perform grief.

Possible causes of your problems. It’s a diagram that (sadly) still seems relevant in 2025, so reposting a year and a bit on.
Diagram titled 'Possible causes of your problems'. On the left hand side, subtitled 'Yes': Funding removed from local councils, growing gap between rich and poor, multinational companies not paying their taxes, lack of new affordable housing, government not investing sufficiently in schools and healthcare. On the right hand side, subtitled 'No': Picture of small boat, with arrow; 'People fleeing horrific situations that you and I can't imagine'.

Title: Doubts cast on another beloved inspirational tale

Panel 1
Our investigations team has learned that the names "Jack" and "Jill" were invented to conceal a less than salubrious past.
(image of smiling Jack and Jill with a bucket)

Panel 2
The pair claim to have climbed a hill to "fetch a pail of water" but we found a number of water sources much closer to their cottage.
(image of a water pump, atwo fountains and a drinking trough)

Panel 3
(image of a book with the title "WELL: a memoir" by Jill)

Jill now concedes that her account of Jack's fall and her own "Tumbling After" was intended to convey feelings, not "Cold facts".

Panel 4
Multiple medical experts expressed Surprise that a broken crown was successfully treated with "Vinegar and brown paper.
(Image of Jack with is head wrapped in brown paper beside an xray of his damaged skull).

10 prevalent misconceptions regarding asylum hotels, clarified and refuted with accurate information for you to share, particularly if you are sick of hearing the same tired and often racially motivated arguments. from Community Integration and Advocacy Centre via @westcountryvoices.bsky.social 🙏🏻
❶ “They’re living in luxury hotels at our expense!”
Fact: These accommodations typically comprise budget hotels or repurposed facilities. The rooms are basic, frequently cramped, lacking kitchen access, and providing limited privacy.

❷ “They get £40 a day spending money.”
Fact: Asylum seekers residing in hotels receive approximately £9.58 per week in cash, equating to about £1.37 daily—insufficient to cover even fundamental necessities.

❸ “They’re taking hotel rooms from paying guests.”
Fact: The government specifically contracts hotels that often have available capacity or are unsuitable for typical guests. Most were not fully booked prior to their use.

❹ “They should be working to pay for their stay.”
Fact: Asylum seekers are prohibited from working while their claims are being processed—a policy decision rather than a personal choice.

❺ “They’re just waiting around doing nothing.”
Fact: The majority of asylum seekers aim to contribute positively. Many engage in volunteering, learning English, or participating in community organisations, despite facing significant uncertainty.❻ “We’re spending millions on them!”
Fact: The high costs associated with hotel use stem from a broken and backlogged asylum system, not from the individuals utilising it. Delays perpetuate a state of limbo, resulting in increased long-term expenses.

❼ “They’re given better treatment than our homeless.”
Fact: Asylum seekers are housed in hotels due to the government’s legal obligation to accommodate them. Homelessness is a distinct and also underfunded issue; one should not be used to justify neglect of the other.

❽ “They’re all men of fighting age.”
Fact: Asylum hotels also house families, women, and children. The narrative surrounding “fighting-age males” is often intended to incite fear rather than accurately represent the situation.

❾ “They could have stayed in a safe country.”
Fact: International law does not mandate claiming asylum in the first safe country encountered. Individuals arrive in the UK for various reasons—language preferences, family connections, historical ties, or safety concerns elsewhere.

𝟏𝟎 “They’re pretending to be refugees to get free stuff.”
Fact: The vast majority of asylum seekers are legitimate refugees fleeing war, torture, and persecution. Their claims undergo individual assessments based on stringent criteria.

Asylum seekers residing in hotels are not leading luxurious lives—they are enduring hardships while awaiting safety. The core issue lies not with those occupying the hotels, but rather with the prolonged circumstances that have led them there.
