What It Feels Like at Cornell Right Now
As a professor at the Ivy League school, Kate Manne has known many, many victims. There’s a palpable feeling on campus, she writes, that this is big.

Even so-called “nice” and “woke” men seem to not understand how often women deal with male harassment and the risk of sexual assault. I dealt with several instances of harassment from men this year, including on LinkedIn. Every single male so-called friend I mentioned it to laid the blame on me.

I literally don’t know a single woman who hasn’t been raped, stalked, groped, harassed, or sexually violated in some way at some point in their life. If you choose to doubt and dox survivors, just know every woman in your life is disgusted by you.

Interesting that conservatives are concerned about ruining the lives of male college students accused of rape but have little concern for the lives of girls and women forced to give birth against their will

One way to do this is to simply believe women when they tell you someone is creepy and stand up for them in the moment! In college my now-husband was the go-to guy to tell creeps to fuck off. Did that make him popular with certain halls on campus? No. But the feeling was mutual lol

Too many men are gonna read this and not see themselves because they’ve never raped anyone, but every ignored no, every time a woman has had to tip-toe around your frustrated sexual desire in order to occupy a public space, is a cog in the machinery of men’s sense of entitlement to women’s bodies.

the cornell case has me thinking about how existing as a woman means knowing you could be the victim of sexual violence at any moment, all while knowing there's a high likelihood no one will believe it even happened if you come forward.

The fun of journalism as a whole right now — not just games — is that everybody is starved for work so execs can get away with underpaying freelancers. That's how content mills like Valnet stay in business. Then those freelancers will be laid off and others will take their place at lower pay

Something I'm discovering while trying to pivot and build non-journalism businesses is that, like all entrepreneurship, it's constantly discouraging and filled with second-guessing. Then I see/hear about more media layoffs (like today) and wonder, "What other choice do I have?"

25 years. Never forgot.
An excerpt from the best-selling book, THE ONLY PLANE IN THE SKY: THE ORAL HISTORY OF 9/11 by Garrett M. Graff. It's my memory from when I was an 18-year-old freshman at NYU.

The text reads:

Mallory Carra, New York University: A long line of people waited for an actual pay phone while trying to use their cell phones. The internet on all of the NYU library computers was painfully slow. After 10 minutes of pressing "refresh," I read a three-lined AP story to my friend Jia aloud. "Two planes have crashed into World Trade Center." It took me a second to even realize what those words even meant. In this pre-Twitter world, I finally summed up my feelings in my LiveJournal at 9:14 a.m., "omg i am so scared."A photo of smoke in the sky under the Washington Square Arch on Sept. 12th, 2001. I took it with a disposable camera when I was 18.As described in THE ONLY PLANE IN THE SKY, my LiveJournal entry from Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2001. Again, I was 18 years old. The text read in part:

"Tuesday, September 11th, 2001
5:36 pm - I'm safe and ok at my aunt's in Manhattan Oh my God. Today was so fucking scary. The day, weather-wise...
...shock right now. You could see the buildings burning from NYU...
I hope all your family members are ok and stay safe everyone.

9:14 am - omg
I am so scared"A photo of me, under the Washington Square Arch, in a May 2005 edition of the Baltimore Sun that called the Class of 2005 "the Class of 9/11," because we were ~18-year-old freshmen during 9/11. The headline reads: "An NYU education in the shadow of terror."

The caption reads: "Aspiring Journalist Mallory Carra and other seniors at New York University will walk on graduation day under the arch in Washington Square Park - an arch that once framed the World Trade Center."

I don't know. Journalism's a tough field. I hope she makes it. I hope she never forgets.

I've been lucky that the pitches I've landed this year came from an established editor relationship, letting me take big swings (the D&D piece, especially). Outside of that, it feels exactly like below. I miss when original ideas and voices felt welcome and freelancing didn't feel so bleak.

Hey reporters, if you load your notes or audio into an AI cloud service (ChatGPT, Claude, Otter, etc), there’s a good chance those companies will comply with a court order and hand that info over. “The rule is simple: Don’t share anything you wouldn’t the service provider or a court to see.”
