The most absolutely massive flex from the state fair exhibit. This quilt is made of 40 years of prize ribbons from various categories at the New Mexico State Fair won by Carol St. Clair Johnson. She also won a prize for this quilt.

satin ribbons

After unexpectedly winning her first blue ribbon for a sewn cape in 1981, Carol St. Clair Johnson developed an enduring love for the New Mexico State Fair. The quilt Fair New Mexico-41 Fair Years incorporates more than six hundred of the ribbons she won at the fair every subsequent year except 2020 (when the fair was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic). Johnson earned ribbons for needlework, knitting, crochet, pies, cookies, cakes, canning, jewelry, flowers, vegetables, and potted plants. The title of the quilt is a reference to the state song, and the design places the state's Zia sun symbol at the center. The quilt earned Johnson yet another ribbon: Best in Category (miscellaneous quilt) at the 2023 New Mexico State Fair.

The world’s population of Asiatic lions has grown from 523 in 2015 to 891 in 2025, a 70% jump. More than 55,000 open wells have been fenced off to stop lions falling in. Wild prey now makes up 74% of their diet, up from just 26% in 1974. buff.ly/uS6umcW #ShareGoodNewsToo

You may recall the case where Lynne Freeman sued Tracy Wolff for writing a YA set in Alaska where the male lead was hot and broody, just like in Freeman's book. This litigation went on for three years before a judge finally read both books and said there was zero infringement.

Joyful launch day to Everybody’s Perfect! I don’t know of any other SF book that so beautifully exemplifies something I learned from direct action AIDS activists: We collectively shape the world that then shapes us, under conditions in which we have limited power but a great deal of agency. 1/
A picture of me, a white woman with glasses, smiling and peering over the top of the book Everybody's Perfect, by Jo Walton. The cover has a woman wearing a Venetian-style mask over her upper face, and she's holding another mask in her left had, surrounded by four other animal masks. In the deep blue background is a Venetian bridge.
