VP of Firefly quoted here referring to "subsidized cost-per-kilo model" for launch wrt SpaceX. Is everyone coming around to the fact (or finally willing to state publicly) that Falcon 9 was never as cheap as claimed, and that SpaceX has been doing venture backed predatory pricing for a decade?

PARIS — Space launch competitors think it’s time for a new model of pricing in the launch market. Against the backdrop of SpaceX winding down the Falcon 9

Unfortunately, I think I can explain. Pure utilitarianism taken to extreme. A 1% chance of a quadrillion humans in the future is worth more than a billion humans today, direct math. Stars don't matter, population does.

Beautiful. I started on that project in 2020 when everything was PowerPoint and Excel and napkin sketches. (okay, not really, but close.) So incredible seeing it built.

10,000% agree. I'm very gung ho about the long term power in AI and very low on near term use and abuse. Lots of places today it is a net negative.

Super excited about this space generally. LLMs, at least the "language" part, are powerful general purpose tools, but the breadth of their output can also be a hindrance in probability space and cost. Similar architectures being more domain specific will be pretty interesting to watch.

It’s very simple. A reality TV host became dictator because he turned down a role for Sharknado 4 and that’s why the king of outer space, who cheats at Diablo, got to kill Africa. Now the economy is controlled by a sex cult that has something to do with Harry Potter fanfic because of robots.

$78 million per crew member, roughly the top end of what the Russians were charging for Soyuz seats after many years of increases and watching NASA just eat it all. "Only ride in town" prices.

The problem is that "while you weren't looking the tech industry was comprehensively taken over by a cult based around a piece of Harry Potter fanfic" is self-evidently an absolutely ridiculous claim that can't possibly have happened, which is a real problem given that it 100% did happen.

Distilling this gets me to what software has started calling cognitive debt (queue.acm.org/doi/10.1145/3807966). Math, like software and like other fields, will have to deal with the cognitive debt associated with LLM use.
