Made a little gallery wall of the alternate covers for First Aid for Choking Victims in my office. So fun to think about the different identities each would have given the book. @angeelio.bsky.social is a genius for all of these really cool designs ! @malarkeybooks.bsky.social
A green wall with postcard size prints of the nine alternate covers for my story collection in small black frames. A book shelf with the top of an electric guitar are visible on the left side of the photograph.

I am always, always grateful that I got to work with a human being for my book cover. I gave him an outline and he executed it. Getting to work with another person is so much more exciting and interesting then a machine.

It is hard but we pay human artists real money for covers. Our jacket copy tends to be a joint venture between our writers and our editors. We don’t use AI for anything. We wish absolute destruction on any publisher that is using AI or LLMs for covers, copy, or anything else. ☠️☠️☠️

The number 1 thing that you can do to help a tiny press like Malarkey stay in operation is to buy ebooks straight from us. They’re all $5 or less and DRM-free and they don’t spy on you. The books, and this is important, are good! malarkeybooks.com/ebooks

This occupies its own genre. There are some surreal/weird fiction elements, but they’re all grounded around blue collar characters just trying to survive. Great stuff, bud.

This is one hell of a way to solicit my business. (It's working.)
Screenshot from the web store page (store webpage? online web store?) for The Grift: Volume 2. The description reads as follows:

The Grift, the greatest and most important literary magazine in history, is back, this time with work from Jacquelyn Bengfort, Zachary Kocanda, Christopher Stevenson, Neil Willcox , Dereck Heckman, Craig Rodgers, Ivy Grimes, Xavier Garcia, Jay Parr, Samuel Day Wharton, and Justin Carter.

The Grift is a PDF-only litmag with a very specific mission: to for God’s sake bring in a little extra money for this money-hemorrhaging small press. We thank you for your patronage!
