In my Atlantic essay I wrote: Flailing regimes dehumanize minorities to distract from their failures. When the economy collapses or a war goes badly, they find a tiny group of people, make them the enemy within. I wrote PDBs about it. This will not stop with trans people. It never has.

Years ago cops were chasing a guy at night; the guy was wearing sneakers with bright flashing LED lights, so it was easy to spot him and catch him. Trump's obscenely questionable practices here are the bright LED flashing lights. But there's no cop.

There's a very good miniseries on Netflix called "Unbelievable" about how the police can mishandle these cases -- and it was based on a real case. Very highly recommended, even though it's very uncomfortable.
