benjo @makeshiftgnome.bsky.social · 03/09/2026we all do it. it's not some huge evil darkness. in some ways it is helpful! but everyone would benefit (at least while capitalism is still kicking) from trying to separate play from labor as much as they can so that leisure time can be completely unproductive. we need both, in the right way 210
benjo @makeshiftgnome.bsky.social · 03/09/2026meanwhile companies implement gamification and scoring systems that ruin the sanctity of play at home in ways we don't even realize. Also, why would I Garden after working 9 hours if I'm exhausted? video games burn less energy. But then you are squeezing fake productivity out of your downtime. 130
benjo @makeshiftgnome.bsky.social · 03/09/2026I think about this a lot. The average American doesn't blame the bourgeoisie for feeling unfulfilled at work. Some blame the concept of doing Labor! So the fulfilling labor we are allowed at home (e.g. Gardening) may get avoided, thus we pervert leisure with simulated labor to fill our need to work. 110
benjo @makeshiftgnome.bsky.social · 03/09/2026this has SO much to do with the Capitalist Labor/Leisure collapse and the result of a market demand for feeling productive when all your labor is alienated. 130
