New: The National Science Foundation is preparing to claw back some $500 million in funds from some of its core science programs in physics, math, computer science, and engineering in order to fund a project from the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.

Since January, I have gotten 8 desk rejections. Is this a new normal and a response to a deluge of AI-enabled papers journals are now receiving and/or dwindling availability of reviewers, or is our science not seen as novel enough (the latter I don't want to believe is true 😆)?

In the latest play from Project 2025, the Trump Administration has announced plans to dismantle the Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI), a $368 million network of more than 900 instruments that continuously monitor the ocean. This is a deliberate destruction of critical scientific infrastructure.

There's some chatter about whether avoiding the phrase "climate change" in an NSF grant constitutes censorship or dishonesty or cynicism or capitulation to fascism or whatever. I thought I'd share my perspective as someone who has grappled with with this (both now and back in 2017-2020).

Update on NSF grant funding: As of April 27, NSF has spent money on 737 new grants for FY26. Avg. for '21–25 at this point is 3303, so NSF is at about 22%. grant-witness.us/funding_curv...

More details on the firing of the National Science Board. The NSF now has no director, deputy director, or board. They have issued almost no new awards in 2026. The plan appears to be to completely destroyed the agency. The details are horrifying and have Russ Vought written all over them.
