This seasonality arises from two key processes. First, the seasonal redistribution of migratory species, which occupy distinct regions of dietary space, alters assemblage composition and thus dietary space; and second, within-species dietary shifts are often pronounced.

We find strong seasonal variation in birds’ dietary space at both the assemblage and species levels globally, with the most pronounced intra-annual dietary shifts occurring in the temperate and boreal regions of the Northern Hemisphere.

Certainly. Some of what I think is my best work went through many rounds of desk rejections before it landed in solid disciplinary journals. Still though it feels like it’s just happening more often.

Yeah, we all are aware of the reviewer shortage but I have not thought much about the editorial availability! I feel like the publication process is now at a breaking point at every step of the pipeline.

The review process has been strained for a long time, with reviews dragging on. If now a paper additionally sits in a desk rejection purgatory for 6 months, we're looking at 1.5-2 year timelines from submission to publication. Impact on early career researchers will be significant.

Are others seeing the same trend? Sure, some of our submissions were to high profile journals, where desk rejections are very common, but others were from journals at which we typically have high success rate.

Since January, I have gotten 8 desk rejections. Is this a new normal and a response to a deluge of AI-enabled papers journals are now receiving and/or dwindling availability of reviewers, or is our science not seen as novel enough (the latter I don't want to believe is true 😆)?
