There's no forgiving this. No living it down. It's a stain on our humanity. When all this is over, the monsters who did this should be pariahs. And the soulless thugs who cheered it on while dehumanizing Haitian immigrants should be reminded of what they did every day of their lives.

In 1626 a cod bought in Cambridge market was found to have inside its gullet a soggy packet containing religious tracts by John Frith, executed in 1533 for Protestant leanings - ironically during the reign of Henry VIII. I can see no propaganda value in the yarn - perhaps it's true? #WyrdWednesday

whenever someone tells you that it's simply impossible for police to be charged with misconduct or criminal charges, you can tell they're wrong because some cops do get charged regularly — when they are whistleblowers or reformers prosecutors are actually extremely eager to help drum them out!

One more try to get the attention of @senangusking.bsky.social ! 1/2
Now the murderers have come to Maine! For a year and a half I delivered the mail on the street where a young Colombian man was shot to death. The people on those streets were my customers: the ones who are angry, marching in the streets; the ones who are terrified, hiding in their apartments; and the ones who are satisfied, come out to gloat and throw Nazi salutes at passers-by. These last at least have the virtue of understanding what they're seeing correctly—it's what they've always wanted! Nazi terror, Nazi brutality, Nazi xenophobia, and the race war they've always dreamed of. This is no longer speakers at the Claremont Institute or vile editorials in Der Stürmer—it is the reality on the ground, enabled by every level of the state apparatus.

What do you plan to do about it? Push for further funding, provided it includes useless body cameras? Write encomiums to "reform" and the "rule of law"? Perhaps ask for a re-shuffling of personnel, maybe take out Tom Homan and send in Jeanine Pirro? As if a machine built and staffed for the express purpose of sparking terror and inflicting violence can be tweaked a little, just enough that the most news-catching incidents fade from public view, releasing the pressure like blood from a blister.

Are things demonstrably worse today than they were yesterday? No, just louder! I'm writing today rather than yesterday because this murder creates an opportunity, a chance that you might actually listen to your constituents, rather than shrug them off with reassurances, denials, and half measures. This killing doesn't need words; it demands actions!

Well, looks like we're getting down to the wire! Any suggestions, @senangusking.bsky.social ?
"Rising Tensions" between the U.S. and Iran? A senile, delusional madman threatens to use nuclear weapons and "wipe out a civilization" and you talk about "rising tensions"? And, I'm sure, you'll send me another lecture about how important it is to fund the government and keep everything running and vote for Trump's judicial nominees because the Ship of Government Must Stay Afloat! Enough! The ship must come to a screeching halt! Anything and everything that brings the American War Machine to a halt is justified because its actions are ILLEGAL and IMMORAL by any possible rubric except that of the SS and the Klan! Until today, your reputation was merely that you sat on your hands and did nothing while Elon Musk perpetrated a genocide against hundreds of thousands of Africans, most of them children. After tomorrow, your legacy will be that you sat on your hands while a deranged dictator started a nuclear war. The stain on the hands of you and your congressional colleagues will not be washed out for generations, maybe forever. When I ask myself "How does Angus King think he can ever return home again?", my only possible answer is that it doesn't matter to you—you got yours, and the rest of the world can burn. We, the people of the United States, will have our Nuremberg, and its time to decide whether you'll be sitting at the prosecutor's table or in the dock.

oh good Lord Kentucky House impeached a judge, saying she abused her authority & was biased in favor of Black defendants their evidence? the judge's statement acknowledging the state's pattern of charging white defendants with lesser offenses and giving them better offers than defendants of color
screenshot of 3 paragraphs from the quote-skeeted article. last two sentences of first paragraph are highlighted in green. excerpt reads as follows:

While Republicans at least gestured toward accountability in their case against Goodwine, they made clear that their impeachment of Goodman was about her rulings. Goodman, a Jefferson County circuit judge, was impeached by the Kentucky House on charges that she abused her authority in certain criminal sentencing and civil rulings. Much of the petition, submitted by former state Representative Killian Timoney, is related to Goodman’s statements about racial disparities in the justice system—for example, a case in which she noted a “clear pattern of disparate charging decisions by the Commonwealth in which white defendants are charged with lesser offenses and given better offers than defendants of color.” Timoney’s petition charged that statements like this are evidence of Goodman’s bias in favor of Black defendants.

The petition also alleged that Goodman gave out criminal sentences that were too lenient, and that she was overly skeptical of claims by lawyers representing the University of Kentucky in employment discrimination cases. Lawmakers pointed to six specific cases that were later reversed by the conservative Kentucky Court of Appeals that they said demonstrate bias.

Before this year, Kentucky has only impeached two judges in its history. In 1806, the House impeached and the Senate removed Judge Benjamin Sebastian for receiving a foreign pension, and for his part in the “Burr Conspiracy” to push states in the then-southwest of the country, including Kentucky, to secede from the United States and form an independent nation. In 1916, the House impeached Judge J.E. Williams for misusing public funds, but the state Senate did not remove him. Now, a century later, the Senate will consider whether to remove Goodman from office, too, for her crime of being too conscious of systemic discrimination.

Fascinated by this glowing Seattle Times profile of longtime Seattle Times publisher Frank Blethen that’s like “haha yes, there were bumps in the road, for example, he was ruthlessly anti-labor, compromised the paper’s editorial independence, and shot a dog” www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news...
Then there were the political ads, paid for by the company, that Blethen bought - full-page political ads weighing in on some of the same races the paper's journalists were covering in the news pages — causing Boardman, then executive editor, to write a column apologizing to readers.
Then, of course, there was the strike.
Seattle Times union workers went on strike over pay and other issues for 49 days, beginning in November
2000. Blethen took it personally. He had windows at the company's headquarters boarded up and a wire fence erected around the building.
During the strike, Blethen wrote a now-legendary email to a local publisher whose presses had printed the strikers' newspaper, venting his wrath.
"(Expletive) you to death," Blethen wrote. When the publisher responded with a conciliatory note, Blethen wrote "What part of (expletive) you to death don't you understand?" — and co'd every newspaper publisher in the state of Washington.Blethen is no button-down newspaper executive, notes John Hughes, the former chief historian in the Washington secretary of state's office and former editor and publisher of The Daily World in Aberdeen. Hughes said scholar Sue Lockett John got it right when she described Blethen as "the last of the buckaroo publishers."
"The neighbor's dog, that wasn't the best," said Alex MacLeod, former managing editor, recalling Blethen's infamous imbroglio with a neighbor on Mercer Island.
Blethen was charged in 1996 with misdemeanor animal abuse for firing a pellet rifle at a neighbor's dog - Blethen admitted to shooting at the ground near the dog but said he did not aim at the animal and did not think he hit it. The dog suffered two wounds, one near its heart. Charges eventually were dropped; Blethen did not admit guilt but paid the neighbor's vet bills and had to do community service.
