I am strangely optimistic that AI offers a framework to build the state we want. I argue in @dissentmag.bsky.social that progressives must not dismiss the energy and opportunity produced by technology’s productive amnesia to reimagine the state and society. dissentmagazine.org/article/ai-u...

The U.S. welfare state was built in moments when technical innovation collided with political reality. It can still offer the infrastructure for social protection under an economy reconfigured by AI.

I am stunned that the constitutional question was so close. I thought it would be 6–3 or 7–2. It is profoundly disturbing that four justices would allow either the president or Congress to rewrite the plain text of the 14th Amendment. This is obviously a good outcome, but the margin is alarming.

More & more eligible low-income people are losing SNAP because of H.R. 1’s bureaucratic hurdles, including this mom who has tried for months to get her family’s benefits back while working & caring for 2 young kids. Keep in mind: SNAP benefits average about $6 per person per day.
She described being caught in a monthslong paperwork back-and-forth with state employees since February, when her benefits failed to arrive. Unable to reach anyone by phone, she finally decided to show up in person at the office in Surprise. On the morning she arrived at 7 a.m., her second visit that week, she had a backpack full of paperwork she was told she needed to provide to verify her income and expenses to have her benefits restored.

But after waiting for four hours to speak with someone, she was told she needed more documentation, including a written statement from her father explaining that a Zelle transfer for her birthday was a one-time gift and not a recurring payment, she said.

snap cuts, growing to 35% by 2034chip and medicaid cuts growing to 12-14% by 2034

Really interesting point from @yappelbaum.bsky.social about how mobility, not staying in one place, is what produces strong communities in the US: www.vox.com/housing/3996...
I was surprised as I researched the book to see what a large role mobility had played in shaping the distinctive character of America, not just in terms of economics. Maybe the most surprising thing is what an enormous role it’s played in shaping the vitality of American community. When people relocate, they tend to feel lonely when they first arrive, and respond to that feeling by reaching out, by making connections, by making themselves do uncomfortable things like joining organizations.

We often think of mobility as something that dissolves the ties that mean the most to us. In practice, though, in the US, mobility has usually served as a kind of social glue, as the thing which binds us to each other. And if you look at the last 50 years with a really sharp decline in mobility, we have simultaneously seen a really sharp decline in other kinds of social ties. That’s not coincidental.
