In a new study my collaborators and I focus on this alternative hypothesis. We asked participants if this statement is true or false: “The Canadian Armed Forces have been secretly developing an elite army of genetically engineered, super intelligent, giant raccoons to invade nearby countries”.

New blog just dropped! This one is all about estimators—we cover James-Stein, classical test theory, empirical Bayes, penalized regression, and hierarchical models, showing how they all can be used to do a better job than sample stats alone 🤓 haines-lab.com/post/how-to-...

Introduction If I asked you to estimate 30 means, you would probably compute 30 sample means. And you would be provably wrong (well.. maybe not wrong, but at least provably inefficient).

I'm in the Guardian today, writing about the question of overdiagnosis of mental illness. I argue we need to stop seeing this as a binary yes/no question - is overdiagnosis happening or is the increase real? - and acknowledge that multiple things can be happening at once tinyurl.com/yzsey97c

Are we really overdiagnosing mental illness?
It’s tempting to dismiss the proliferation of labels as a fad, but there’s more to this phenomenon than a simple culture-war reading allows

Modern academic publishing part II: Sage has now blocked my (university) IP address because I have had a tab open for >4 hours since my license does not allow downloading. I now have to write my colleagues an email so that I can read papers that they are already paying an annual fee of ~100K€ for.

This one surely has something on offer for every one: In this cross-sectional mediation analysis, the "effects" of soft drink consumption on depression were "mediated" by abundance of Eggerthela in the gut microbiome. This was sent to me via dm and now you all got to suffer as well.

Our new paper is out today! 🎉 In it, we use administrative register data to document how psychiatric disorders are strongly linked to parental income, from childhood far into adulthood. Furthermore, we attempt to separate causation and selection using kinship-based models. doi.org/10.1111/jcpp...

New preprint! We find no evidence that parental mental health influences children's academic achievement when comparing families in the Norwegian MoBa study. osf.io/preprints/ps... Quick thread 👇
Main figure of the paper: Associations between parental mental health (anxiety and depression, alcohol problematic use, ADHD, eating disorder) with children's tests scores in mathematics, reading comprehension and English as second language at age 10.

Roy Baumeister called ego depletion "one of the most replicable findings in social psychology." As someone who spent 20 years studying it—and ultimately had to admit it wasn't real—I have to respectfully disagree. Here's my perspective of what went so wrong.

I spend a lot of time teaching non-scientists basic statistical concepts 📊. Effect size is especially hard to explain—PDFs, histograms, box plots, violin plots, and so on just don’t cut it. We need a new approach. Here’s one that requires minimal prior knowledge to understand.

Barn av lavt utdannede foreldre gjør det dårligere på skolen, og ender ofte opp med lavere utdanning, lavere inntekt, og høyere arbeidsledighet enn andre. Hvorfor er det slik?
