Auto glass repair businesses suffer as Oakland break-ins decline
A decline in car break-ins across Oakland is being welcomed as a public safety win, but it is also contributing to a downturn for some local auto glass repair businesses.

even if you have an implacably hostile audience that is treating every claim you make skeptically, the way human psychology works, repeating the claim still reinforces it. many are likely to retain the false information and forget where they heard it.

i feel like the model here is anti-union captive audience meetings, which are stupid in the exact same way but absolutely do work. propaganda works, even if it's ham-fisted and obvious! it's tempting to think that it inherently backfires but it doesn't

"The idea that the poor should have leisure has always been shocking to the rich. In the early nineteenth century, fifteen hours was the ordinary day's work for a man; children sometimes did as much, and very commonly did twelve hours a day. When meddlesome busybodies suggested that perhaps these hours were rather long, they were told that work kept adults from drink and children from mischief.

When I was a child, shortly after urban working men had acquired the vote, certain public holidays were established by law, to the great indignation of the upper classes. I remember hearing an old Duchess say: 'What do the poor want with holidays? They ought to work.' People nowadays are less frank, but the sentiment persists, and is the source of much of our economic confusion."

America had a model of scientific innovation that clearly worked and is now being attacked by people who don't understand science. The market will not just produce less science and train fewer scientists; it will also be less likely to share scientific breakthroughs for the public good.
Third, the private sector will not treat knowledge as a public good. Rapid scientific development requires that we share and disseminate the knowledge that we create. The private sector acts in proprietary ways to ensure they enhance profits. Federal research funding does the opposite. It requires scientists to widely share the innovations, tools, and data that they generate. For example, NSF spends a good portion of its budget funding shared resources, like telescopes or detailed data collection efforts. NIH behaves in a similar fashion. These resources are shared widely (with careful and rigorous protections for human subjects) across the scientific community and the private sector.

I’m curious if justified Biden haters who unjustifiably protest-voted for Trump think Kamala would have green-lit Israel invading Lebanon (again). The “these candidates are exactly the same” discourse was exhausting, I think wrong, and I suspect partially astroturfed.

Too many Americans still retain a presumption of normalcy, that institutional guardrails will kick in and the Trump era will become a historical period for the textbooks. They need their imagination widened by comparative-historical analysis. Things both can be bad *and* can get so much worse.

One thing that I’ve learned in my study of backlash politics from Reconstruction through the Civil Rights Movement is that backlashers are a persistent bunch. The undoing of Reconstruction took several decades, and post-WWII backlashers looked back on that patient counterrevolution as a model.

Statements from Dems like this one make it harder to press for Supreme Court reform. This ruling was a near-disaster and shows how unhinged SCOTUS has become—now just one vote away from overturning the 14th Amendment. But a sitting senator says they "applaud" the ruling.
BREAKING: Rosen Applauds Supreme Court Decision Protecting Birthright Citizenship

WASHINGTON, DC - Today, U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen (D-NV) issued a statement applauding the Supreme Court’s decision in the Trump vs. Barbara case, striking down Donald Trump’s unconstitutional attempt to take away citizenship from children born in the U.S.

“It has always been clear: a child born in the United States is an American citizen,” said Senator Rosen. “I applaud the Supreme Court’s decision today to defend the U.S. Constitution and honor the right to automatic citizenship for all U.S.-born children. Today’s decision also makes clear that Donald Trump is not above the law, and he cannot unilaterally take away anyone’s constitutional rights.”

Senator Rosen has led Congressional efforts to protect citizenship for children born in the U.S. In February, Senator Rosen led an amicus brief in Trump vs. Barbara, demanding the protection of birthright citizenship as guaranteed by the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. Last year, she led Senate colleagues in introducing the Born in the USA Act, which would effectively block the implementation of President Trump’s unconstitutional Executive Order attempting to end automatic citizenship for children born in the United States.

Absolutely. For example, Trump obliterating USAID, the Dept of Education, and CFPB, plus arbitrarily refusing to pay appropriations to states, cities, and grant recipients, should all have been non-starters—but SCOTUS jumped in to make clear the laws passed by Congress don't matter.
