I saw a video by a movie designer who was trying to make an authentic-seeming menu for a 90s Chinese restaurant. He visited so many cool places, like the calligrapher who did a lot of the menus back then and the stock photo library where lots of restaurants get their images - nationally!

And not only is is the right thing to do, but divide that one time cost over the number of years you plan to be in business AND IT LOOKS LIKE A PRETTY GOOD DEAL ACTUALLY.

It’s crazy how there’s always this underlying assumption that white dudes are entitled to an audience. What is the consequence here? He loses his megaphone. Maybe has to get a boring normal person job. (lbr he’ll just pivot to alt right) Somehow this is horrific injustice.

My theory: More than critiques of circular financing, or of dubious product functionality, "stochastic parrots" undermines the foundation that the entire AI boom is built on: The story that the AI industry is building an unfathomably powerful machine god.

We can learn from our queer elders 🫶🏻

when my masc lesbian aunt died, women just kept coming, screaming, crying, and saying they were her wives. Eventually we just had to start telling them to join the others. They were all devastated to learn about each other. Except for one who came in, kissed her dead mouth and showed us all that they had matching tattoos. She actually won all the mourning wives over and they all agreed she was the wife. It was so weird.Did not expect more than a few people to see this but yes it really happened, yes it was insane

People have sex in cars and parks and woods and so on. And get caught doing so (sometimes deliberately). But the specific voyeuristic component just isn’t there on a cultural level. It might happen, but it’s not common enough to have a term.

Every single character sucks in one way or another so really the only sensible reaction is to rotate them like a shawarma and give them even worse backstories as a treat. Like adding tinsel to a tree. It makes them shinier.

I’ve heard I should play it solely to critique how badly they screwed up the general geography. Apparently sometime in the next century, the most prominent gayborhood will be bulldozed to turn into an industrial area, which will then promptly be abandoned to turn into creepy warehouses.

Did we read the same series? The conflict had nothing to do with the slavery. It was about xenophobia/race purity. At the end, there is zero change in the greater status quo re slavery. In fact, the books explicitly say that elves being enslaved is a good thing. Disturbing.

Sometimes I think to this scifi book by a male author. Came out TWO YEARS AGO. The plot was just: what if this neolib engineer had a series of barely connected adventures with critiques of welfare thrown in like sprinkles. Full of author’s inability to imagine women having a full internal life.

The Forest of Galtres was established by Norman Kings and spread North from York's walls. It covered 100,000 acres and encompassed 60 villages. As early as 15th century concerns were expressed about deforestation and by 1629 it had all but disappeared. The Hall is its legacy.
We are looking at the Great Hall and its soaring oak framed roof. It is a sunny day so the light can be seen coming through the Georgian sash windows and making puddles of sunlight on the pine floors. The roof glows in a warm brown colour.

There are, of course, MASSIVE problems with these “valuable” outputs. But it doesn’t change the fact they consider it valuable and thus - intermittent reward which can turn into an addiction cycle.

Mads @madsjesty.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
More specifically: what they PERCEIVE to be valuable. From what I’ve seen: Allowing you to produce work while skipping the long skilling up stage. Hyper-agreeable conversation that never gets impatient. Easy research - just ask and get a plausible answer.

Think of it like a gambling addiction. Feed the token into the machine, get back something valuable JUST often enough to trigger that unpredictable reward system. It makes unfortunate sense to me that some people get caught up.
