AGAIN: the #1 predictor of a mass shooter is violence against women. Cops perpetrate VAW at higher % (though exact # unknown ofc) than the gen population. At some point our culture must take seriously the fact that this is a real red flag. It requires hating women less, though.

I think it is important to remind ourselves we actually have very little control over what happens in the world at any given time. The control we do have—however limited—is in our response to what is happening. Most of our existence is internal. We live and die in our own minds.

this is really well said www.liberalcurrents.com/graham-platn... @liberalcurrents.com
There is also the elementary truth that Platner is but one man among millions; we are no more condemned to him than we are to Susan Collins. Neither has a right to rule; that is what democracy means. To say that we should have standards for those who govern us, and hold them to higher ones than we may hold a private citizen, is not elitism. It is a bulwark against everything we’re now fighting against—who can deny that Trump’s dictatorial streak is downstream of his violent entitlement, personal bigotry, and utter lack of moral restraint? His solipsism is a cataclysmic personal flaw, and has proven fatal when applied to the mighty instruments of American power. His personal flaws have a body count that may already number in the millions.

Ruling against TPS for Haitians, the Trump justices on the Supreme Court have set a new impossible standard for proving discrimination against non-whites: if there is any other reason *in addition* to the racism, the racism doesn’t count www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/0...
Mullin now sets up an even more impossible double standard. If the government wants to discriminate against Black people, any pretext will do. “As long as there is a plausible basis—any plausible articulable basis—for the government’s action, then the Court will look to that basis as sufficient,” Aderson Francois, a law professor at Georgetown University, told me, “even in the face of evidence that government actors were motivated by animus.” If a Black person wants to prove they’ve been discriminated against, however, no amount of evidence will suffice.

“This Court sees race when it wants to, and blinds itself to racism in most other cases,” Melissa Murray, a law professor at NYU, told me. “It’s hard to imagine how egregious the statement would have to be to be considered ‘overtly racial’.”
