Precisely. Be weary of anyone who renders an academic field in such simplistic terms. This binary has plagued #History’s public perception since the 1990s, and has been particularly destructive in an era when reading long form is in such decline. #cdnhist

We also read Clare Sears' "All that Glitters: Trans-ing California's Gold Rush Migrations" and students were taken with Sears' discussion of white masculinity as constructed in opposition to the "femininity" of Chinese men. These readings emphasized the interplay between gender, race, & sexuality.

In Week 4, we moved into the 19th century and explorations of queerness and race. Hansen's analysis of the "bosom sex" between Addie Brown and Rebecca Primus was blowing minds in our classroom; we really recommend her article "'No Kisses is Like Yourse'" from @genderandhistory.bsky.social.

Similarly, in responding to Richard Godbeer's thorough examination of the sin of sodomy in colonial New England, students were incensed by how the criminalization of men who pursued sex with other men during this period is one of the only means by which we know of them now - through court documents.

That video paired very well with Elizabeth Reis' article on intersex bodies and "same-sex" sex in 17th and 18th century British North American colonies. Students were indignant about the violations Thomas/ina Hall faced during trial, and this piece really affirmed the fluidity of physical sex.

I also started Week 3 with a video from the same series, this one featuring Maria Tridas explaining #intersex. Extremely useful video for laying out some key info as well as parameters for safe(-r) class discussion (re: slurs to avoid).

These conversations were helped along by starting class with this video featuring Passamaquoddy two-spirit activist and story-teller Geo Neptune. Students then had lots of questions about the #2SLGBTQIA+ acronym, especially the shifting placement of the "2S" in relation to the rest of it.

We also learned about Kaúxuma núpika from @scrawfordobrien.bsky.social's article "Gone to the Spirits: A Transgender Prophet on the Columbia Plateau," which generated great discussion on themes of both articles (transformation, boundary-crossing, and death and rebirth), as well as research methods.

In Week 2, we shifted to considering Indigenous genders & sexualities. Students were shattered and then uplifted by Deborah A. Miranda's "Extermination of the Joyas: Gendercide in Spanish America" article. Revelatory study of the resilience and reclamation of Chumash third gender people & histories.

All of that, plus listening to oublaire's "History Hates Lovers" song (fair warning: this will get stuck in your head), and a critical discussion of the Genderbread Person (optional reading: xtravisage.medium.com/beyond-the-g...) made for a great start to the course.

Week 1 started with some classics: Faderman's "Who Hid Lesbian History?" and @susanstryker.bsky.social's terminology intro to her book Transgender Histories. Students were really upset by the bowdlerization Faderman discusses, and learned a *lot* from working through Stryker's definitions.
