Also it’s a public safety issue. Letting people avoid punnishment for committing crimes while intoxicated is not good. Being intoxicated and assaulted is not a public safety issue. Smarter people than me can likely lay out other reasons. /x

… it’s just that they made the decision to become intoxicated when they had the capacity to decide and the willingly reduced their capacity and therefore do not get a pass. So being a victim is not an illegal act. So capacity to consent is an issue.

Not a lawyer, but in an adjacent field. Basically legislators have passed statutes in all US jurisdictions that do not allow one to remove culpability for illegal acts if one is voluntarily intoxicated. It does not mean the person had the capacity to knowingly commit the crime, … /1

Being overconfident could be an issue. About 1982. Driving some friends home from school event. Started near downtown STL. Got totally turned around trying to take a shortcut that I really didn’t know. Ended up 20 minutes further south than intended. Oops. Finally hit a HWY I knew.

Grew up in STL. They had a map book that let you look up a street. Turn to the page and the coordinates for that page would tell you where the street was. Then you navigated backwards. I’d usually find a near by major road and then I’d know how to get there.

I like GPS for ETA. Both Apple and Google are pretty damn accurate even when accounting for traffic when I’m driving from STL or KC to home. They’ve also helped me take a different route more than once when there was an accident in the burbs around STL or KC.

For a long time I've wanted a sense of how trump has or hasn't interacted with chatbots (we know he posts a lot of slop sure). And this TIME anecdote about Grok arguably leading Trump into war is just extremely bracing

Since returning to office, Trump has marveled at AI’s capabilities. He is increasingly in thrall to the tech executives courting him. In December 2025, Elon Musk returned to the Oval Office for a clandestine meeting. Trump spent hours asking Grok, Musk’s AI chatbot, questions about his presidency and legacy, according to an official present. At the time, Trump was ordering missile strikes against Venezuelan boats he alleged were smuggling drugs into the U.S. He asked Grok how Venezuelans would react if the U.S. captured Maduro. According to the official present, the chatbot responded that Maduro was a repressive and deeply unpopular dictator and that many Venezuelans would likely celebrate his downfall. After Trump ordered the mission to seize Maduro, the following month, celebrations broke out in the streets. Trump, according to officials, came away thinking Grok was ingenious.
