Right-wing nationalist populist movement led by charismatic demagogue, failed in coup attempt but later got some power electorally and illegally seized more, deployed secret police to put minorities in concentration camps, and launched aggressive war, but do not compare to the Nazis, that’d be rude.

David Brooks pearl-clutching over John Ossoff calling a white nationalist a “white nationalist,” as if the problem with violent white nationalism is people objecting to it, illustrates this point as well as humanly possible.

The right wing crash out over asian students celebrating at a UT football game reveals that all along the true goal of reactionary colorblindness was never “meritocracy” but resegregation. (Gift link) www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/1...
Color-blind meritocracy was, for many years, a successful rhetorical strategy for undermining antidiscrimination law and excluding Black people from selective schools and prominent positions. That’s why so many former segregationists seemed to suddenly embrace the concept in the 1970s. For them, resegregation—not color-blindness—was always the goal. As long as the success of some immigrants could be used to paint Black students as undeserving, color-blind meritocracy was good. But now many on the right see a new problem: too many Asian Americans in elite spaces. Their success, therefore, must be portrayed as a sinister theft of real (white) Americans’ birthright.

The declining “social trust” that the administration warned against is, of course, not the fault of these students. The problem is bigots like Bo French who cannot accept into their community people who do not share their race and religion, and those who monetize or otherwise profit from that bigotry by spreading it through social media. Like the proverbial child who kills their parents and asks for mercy as an orphan, they are responsible for the problem they are decrying.

interesting that conservatives were militantly “we must reward hustle” when the target was affirmative action at elite universities and now, when faced with the success of south asians and other groups, it is “i think we are too meritocratic”

That's not permanent though, cases in point Trump II and Bolsonaro II. The electorate seems to have the collective memory of a gnat. Things in Brazil aren't even going terribly, the swing back is all manufactured in social media. Its maddening.

Impossible to understand how anyone could look at Rufo's career and conclude he was someone engaged in a "forthright defense of meritocracy." Rufo's entire career is built on the idea of purging people who don't think or look like him from positions of power.

The truly insane part is, Trump wasn't "something different" in 2024. He was the guy who promised Covid would "go away" and it didn't, then tried to overturn the 2020 election by violence and trickery.

Joe Biden was too old to be president. Trump is the same age as Biden was when he was president. And it’s obvious that Trump is less mentally healthy than Biden was. So when will the media report that the president’s brain is broken? If the answer is “never,” that means the media are broken too.

Why? He hit a standing double and made the boneheaded decision to try and advance to third. That’s two different actions and baseball scoring recognizes that as it always has. The hit goes against the pitcher as it should and the latter is scored for the fielders as it should.

The 2024 GOP policy platform was: -Put Trump above the law, let him crime without consequence -Hurt the darkies and the queers -Make things more expensive -Censor media and academia -Empower corrupt tech oligarchs And it worked! Voters were into it. So I can see the logic of trying that again.

Laugh at Eric Schmitt and Co. for Hawkeyes/Hawks, sure. Their screw up is funny and they deserve the mockery. But also, this was the GOP and allied media geared up to defend a coup attempt with lies and jail a prosecutor because he tried to enforce the law against a criminal. How far we've fallen.

After Eric Schmitt lied and was corrected at the Jack Smith hearing, the NY Times called it a “misunderstanding.” This might be fair if Schmitt had a record of honesty (he doesn’t) and if Schmitt didn’t repeat the same lie after the hearing (he did). What the hell is the NY Times doing?
Devlin Barrett and Charlie Savage
Reporting from Washington
Jack Smith, who as special counsel twice charged Donald J. Trump with criminal offenses after his first term, defended his actions in testimony before Congress on Tuesday, as a Republican senator accused him of perjury based on what appeared to be the lawmaker’s misunderstanding about a basketball game involving the University of Iowa Hawkeyes.

Again, bigots will never choose bigotry-lite over the real thing. You're not going to win them but you're going to drive away people who otherwise would have voted for you. And this year -- when voters most of all want "a fighter" in Congress -- running ads about how you will not fight is idiotic.
