So a lot of us kids of boomers complain that our parents never got to know us. Which is real. But as a childless adult, I have very cool nieces and over the past few years I've been truly getting to know them and it has been so healing for everyone involved. 10/10 highly recommended 🥹

Project Hail Mary is already on my list of movies that I can just throw on in the backround while I do a bit of work or puttering around. (Not sure whether that’s an endorsement or not…I like the movie!) Anyhoo, if you g

Impressive things happening in naming nowadays. We're pushing the language to its limits, asking words to describe things they've never described before.

Saw a roadside sign that read "If your office were here, you'd already be at work." Intellectually I get it. Emotionally... I don't know that this is landing as intended.

A front view of a beige Apple Macintosh IIcx desktop computer from 1989. The setup includes a tall CRT monitor sitting atop the slim computer case, an external floppy disk drive to the right, a full-size Apple keyboard in front, and a one-button mouse. The system is photographed against a clean white background, highlighting its minimalist industrial design and compact form factor for its era.

AI visualization tools can do anything, just add imagination! For example, I could use AI to imagine what "The Odyssey" would look like if Wes Anderson directed it. I could even use AI to imagine what other movies would look like if Wes Anderson directed them.

A still from Widow's Bay with subtitles. The image shows the photo of a dead priest at his own funeral, with flowers either side of the picture. The text reads: Once again, I'd like to remind everyone that it is not mandatory that you speak.

Italian voice actor Carlo Bononi was the voice of all of the characters on Pingu. A trained clown by trade, he used a theater technique called grammelot, which consists of "speaking" in a mix of babbled gibberish noises. He improvised all the voices live and unscripted.

‘Say yes and never do it’ Mel Brooks knew how to deal with the studios
You have some wonderful stories of basically getting away with stuff at the studios.

I’d learned one very simple trick: say yes. Simply say yes. Like Joseph E. Levine, on “The Producers,” said, “The curly-haired guy—he’s funny looking. Fire him.” He wanted me to fire Gene Wilder. And I said, “Yes, he’s gone. I’m firing him.” I never did. But he forgot. After the screening of “Blazing Saddles,” the head of Warner Bros. threw me into the manager’s office, gave me a legal pad and a pencil, and gave me maybe twenty notes. He would have changed “Blazing Saddles” from a daring, funny, crazy picture to a stultified, dull, dusty old Western. He said, “No farting.” I said, “It’s out.”That’s probably the most famous scene in the movie, the campfire scene.

I know. He said, “You can’t punch a horse.” I said, “You’ll never see it again.” I kept saying, “You’re absolutely right. It’s out!” Then, when he left, I crumpled up all his notes, and I tossed it in the wastepaper basket. And John Calley, who was running [production at] Warner Bros. at the time, said, “Good filing.” That was the end of it. You say yes, and you never do it.

That’s great advice for life.

It is. Don’t fight them. Don’t waste your time struggling with them and trying to make sense to them. They’ll never understand.

We are living in a golden era of product design, in that everything is constantly mid-design, even post-launch. Perpetual beta. Does the product work the way it is supposed to? Small-brain thinking! When everything is kind of broken, everything is an opportunity to keep designing.
