I'm trying to be more diligent about crossposting for people who have been kind enough to follow me here. Yesterday, some people on Twitter asked me to explain the difference between a four-in-hand and Windsor knot, and why one would be considered "better." So here's a thread. 🧵 (1/19)

Was at a Christmas party with a load of clergy last night and as some people were leaving they found a person collapsed on the street outside so the Verger took over and called an ambulance and sent all the clergy away because "if they wake up surrounded by priests that'll just make things worse"

thinking about the time a cool Instagram fashion account asked me to name my favorite products and i didn't know i was supposed to name fashion products, so i said pigeon food because i like feeding pigeons and their followers were like "why the fuck do i need pigeon food for my outfit?"
The Instagram account Saint featured me. The first slide says: "Derek Guy - Dieworkwear. Derek Guy is a menswear writer who has written for The New York Times, Esquire, and Mr. Porter. He also runs a menswear blog called Die, Workwear"One of the slides showing my favorite products. It's it's a big bag of Hagen pigeon food. The food is fortified with the vitamins and nutrients pigeons need. Instagram user writes: "Why tf do i need pigeon food for my outfit." I replied: "this is what i can afford to eat after spending all my money on clothes ::sad face::"

Any em dash fans here? We're currently working on a Windows-wide keyboard keyboard shortcut for em dash and em dash, to make it easier to input for those that need it 😊 blogs.windows.com/windows-insi... #WindowsInsiders
Screenshot of the linked blog, saying: We’re adding a new keyboard shortcut to make it easier for you to insert an En dash (–) or Em dash (—) while typing anywhere in Windows. Going forward, pressing WIN + Minus (-) will insert En dash, and WIN + Shift + Minus (-) will insert Em dash. Note – if you have Magnifier running, WIN + Minus (-) will still zoom out Magnifier, rather than inserting an En dash

Go to the mountains, finish a trail race, see some cool rocks
Rocky cliffs and a valley below. It’s a warm and sunny day, and the valley looks full of life. There are a few scattered buildings in the valley but other than those, it’s mostly forest and meadowA path in the forest, illuminated by evening light. Moderately high grass grows between the trees. The path is modern and made out of wooden planksAn abstract looking image of rock formations. The rocks are separated by crevassesA tree growing in a rock, illuminated by harsh summer sunlight. Have been a tad busy with other things, so I haven't delved too deeply into this yet! At some point, I'll need to get in touch with some accessibility developers/ engineers to chat about this :)

Does anyone have a good security analysis of Apple accessibility features? Are there for example security mechanisms which ensure that speech transcribed for accessibility reasons is instantly deleted or processed via a Secure Enclave?

My favourite reviews are those in which the person, by complaining, actually highlights a really nice aspect of the place. Especially those which highlight how local (vs globalised) the place is

Pretty big news! This week, the National Cyber Security Centre of the UK announced that it will be rolling out passkeys across the UK’s digital services later this year. The organization will also be joining the FIDO Alliance to help shape the evolution of passkeys. www.ncsc.gov.uk/news/governm...

Volume encryption with FileVault in macOS
In Mac OS X 10.3 or later, Mac computers provide FileVault, a built-in encryption capability to secure all data at rest.

Łukasz @lukasz.bsky.social · 06/05/2025
I understand also that if you enable FileVault on Apple Silicon, it doesn’t re encrypt (as the encryption already happened), just adds a password requirement. Don’t have a device on hand but curious if that’s also your experience

Łukasz @lukasz.bsky.social · 06/05/2025
it’s also the Lockdown Mode precedent: Apple publicly hinting that all software is imperfect and we need defense in depth
110
Łukasz @lukasz.bsky.social · 06/05/2025
The other thing is that Apple Silicon starts to decrypt once the device boots—so if someone managed to find a way to break macOS security mechanisms, they could decrypt the drive. FileVault won’t decrypt without the password
000
Łukasz @lukasz.bsky.social · 06/05/2025
Yup, completely understand. It’s just not very clear what sorts of attacks FileVault protects against now that the Apple Silicon default encryption doesn’t. Maybe if someone found a flaw that bypassed the Apple Silicon encryption, FileVault serves as good defense in depth

Warsaw’s Palace of Culture at night, surrounded by several skyscrapers. It’s a tall building in the socialist realist style that dominates the landscape around it. It’s lit up in red and blue colours. Despite having been built by a horrible occupying power, we managed to turn the Palace of Culture into a key part of our democratic city’s skyline

Not true. I'll give you some examples of when styles crossed over from womenswear to menswear, and how men have worn straight-up womenswear or just feminine styles in cool ways. 🧵
A screenshot from Twitter.

The original tweet reads: "Rapper Kenderick Lamar wore size 29 women's jeans to Super Bowl LIX." The tweet garnered over a thousand replies, most negative.

I (Derek Guy) screenshotted that tweet and wrote: "so funny to see history repeat itself. men who wear slim fit and stretch denim—both of which were once considered strictly for women—criticizing kendrick for wearing flares bc they were on the women's aisle. in ten years, you'll be in flares clutching pearls about something else"

Then another user replied to my tweet, saying: "Wearing women’s clothes has never been in style, homo."

Intel's Pentium processor (1993) can compute sines, logarithms, and other special functions. To do this, it has a ROM with 304 floating-point constants. I reverse-engineered this ROM and extracted the constants. You can see pi in the ROM, binary 11.001001..., encoded in the transistor pattern. 1/n
A diagram showing how pi is encoded in the Pentium chip. The Pentium has a ROM to hold constants in the lower right. Zooming in on the ROM shows how it holds exponents in the left and the signficand in the right. Zooming in more shows the individual transistors in the ROM. Eight bits are indicated with arrows, the binary bits that start pi.
