oh for sure, and to be clear I prefer open weight models and think that's the obvious way this will evolve, guess I was just pedantically pointing out that running it either way is picking your poison lmao. def see your your point now though!

LUKAKONA @lukakona.online · 06/10/2026

Sorry if this comes off ranty, word count makes me need to be concise lol. But tldr I strongly disagree with the opinion that local models solve anything that people here actually care about

100

LUKAKONA @lukakona.online · 06/10/2026

Destroying the incentives for mass scraping and training would beo great, but I fail to see how moving the processing of inference to your gaming PC helps that end. Owning your data is really the only benefit, but llms are trained on online commons so I'm not super sympathetic to that concern

110

LUKAKONA @lukakona.online · 06/10/2026

a local model has already been trained. an absurd amount of data has already been crunched by the model, which is a massive amount of the energy consumption. Why do you think local models destroy the incentives there? Research labs like Qwen and GLM don't train these out of kindness

100

LUKAKONA @lukakona.online · 06/10/2026

all this is just to say that imo local inference doesn't solve any of the issues people generally have with llms outside of the "giving money to bad people" part

120

LUKAKONA @lukakona.online · 06/10/2026

(on a semi related note, I'm pretty unconvinced that an inefficient locally run model is any more conscious than paying for some chinese cloud inference)

110

LUKAKONA @lukakona.online · 06/10/2026

i agree that local models are pretty easy to set up and can be decently capable (with extremely strong guidance and a ton of vram), although they're definitely an enthusiast tool rather than a valuable code assistant

Resident Evil (2026) loved it they gotta just give zach creggar a blank check going forward. probably my favorite video game adaptation in the sense that it was so Video Gamey without feeling lame or pandering It has like "levels" and item progression and enemy progression and bosses. just so fun
