The UK is subject to extremely well-crafted and persistent cognitive warfare. This affects nearly all commentators. The boundless joy you see whenever anyone - eg Spanish PM - says anything remotely positive about UK is an over-reaction caused by a decade of deep misery. Best discounted.

You personally may not have got what you voted for. Your country did. Britain voted Leave and then elected governments committed to implementing it. Individual Remainers were outvoted. That’s unfortunate for them; it doesn’t rewrite what the country collectively chose.

Britain wants “Made in Europe” privileges after choosing to leave Europe’s economic institutions. SAFE should have cured this delusion: friendship buys a hearing, not membership benefits. Those still come with rules, obligations and money. Brexit means being outside.

The withdrawal of the US from the world stage will extend beyond current political leadership. For sure this is an opportunity for Europe to shake off the dependency: Since the US will (not: may) not assist Europe when needed, any US footprint in Europe is at best a waste, and at worst a risk.

The UK thought it could start at 100% of MS benefits, and negotiate downwards, giving up as few benefits as possible; the reality was that, having left, it started with 0% benefits and had to negotiate up from there, trying in that way to secure as many of its former benefits as possible.

Excellent piece. The reality is that the EU has moved on, at pace. This latest proposal is utter bilgeand not the product of serious consideration. The UK is a 3rd country with a weak economy and a dysfunctional polity, the redlines are a nonsense.
