The fact that politicians continue to cry about affordable housing while ignoring the hundred thousands of empty properties across the UK that could benefit those in need is sickening. The UK needs to ensure that homeowners can only own one property, and needs to put an end to corporate ownership.

The UK doesn't need more housing. We have plenty! What we need is a redistribution of the housing assets currently available across the UK, at affordable prices, without being affected by the perceived value of the area those assets are in!

On Rightmove, right now, there are over five hundred thousand properties for sale. At least half of those properties are entirely vacant. There are also over a hundred thousand rental properties that are advertised and vacant.

I would much prefer to interact with someone who is comfortable at their job than with someone who has been standing for hours on end and will be getting more and more irritable because of it. This was required at one of my old jobs and it was horrendous, making customer interaction so much worse.

It would be nice to have a simple toggle setting in the Appearance tab of the settings menu, or even the ability to keep the new themes without changing the whole visual of the browser. But that's just personal preference.

For people that have recently updated @firefox.com and encountered the new rounded visuals, you can revert the visuals pretty easily, if you're not a fan. Type about:config into your address bar. Search for browser.nova.enabled in the preferences search. Set that setting to false. All done!

For all that it's been barely reported in the UK press, it's still hard to understate the importance of the stance @labourunionsuk.bsky.social has taken on trans and non-binary rights this week. Every single trade union affiliated to the party of government has stood up and said we will not comply.

This week we learned that the Irish government has proposed weakening Europeans citizens' fundamental right to privacy to favour AI companies. We also learned this week that 83% of Irish people under 25 want stronger government regulation of AI. Who *exactly* does our government work for?

In a leaked document, the Irish Presidency proposes to EU Member States that the interest of OpenAl, Anthropic, Google, Meta and SpaceX to make profits should take precedence over the fundamental right to data protection. Use of personal data "in the context of Al" should automatically be lawful.
There seems to be wide informal agreement by many Member States. In particular, Big Tech would be able to use all personal data collected over the past decades with virtually no restrictions, as long as this happens "in the context" of Al. Schrems: "Under these proposals, the profits of Al companies would trump European's fundamental right to privacy. This is nothing but a digital expropriation of Europeans." All this is happening despite the key figures of Al corporations actively warn about the enormous risks associated with their own products.

Transport costs and mental health also remain prominent concerns.
More than seven in ten adults believe Al will make it harder for young people to find secure employment over the next five years, while 83% support stronger government regulation of Al.
Just 17% of young adults said they believe the Government is doing enough to support them through the cost-of-living crisis.
"These findings should serve as a wake-up call," said Grace McManus, Policy and Campaigns Manager at NYCI.
"Too many young people feel that the chance to build a secure and independent life is slipping out of reach," Ms McManus said.
The polling was conducted by RED C, which surveyed a nationally representative sample of 1,010 adults, including a cohort aged 18-24.

That whole situation taught the corporate guys behind the devs just how much Firefox users hate AI systems, so that was about as far as they took it.

They added a very small client side AI system to follow the trend, but they also implemented what the Firefox dev team literally calls an AI Killswitch that removes it from your Firefox install entirely if you don't want to use it.

Mmm. Makes sense. Are you thinking something Windows based or something that can run a light Linux Distro? Generally speaking, Linux is more performative on low spec systems and may be cheaper overall, but takes a little bit of set up.

Stepping away from Amazon for a second, I would recommend looking into a Framework laptop. You can buy the lower cost version to start with and then upgrade parts later down the line. It won't necessarily be cheap, but the upgradability will ensure it lasts a good long time.
