Lauren @lpangborn.bsky.social · 10/09/2026This idea is why this graphic bothers me so much. I want safer land use to be 50%, safer roads to be 40%, and everything else can share the remaining 10%. Having appropriate infrastructure for the land use means the others become nearly irrelevant 020
Lauren @lpangborn.bsky.social · 10/09/2026One other piece of news (and another reason I’ll still be running in the transportation circles): @hgamiel.bsky.social and I are starting a nonprofit project (!) around trail and greenway branding, maps, and signage that we’ll be unveiling in a month or so. Keep your eyes peeled. 050
Lauren @lpangborn.bsky.social · 10/09/2026Even though I’m stepping down from Transportation Commission + the Bicycle Advisory Board, I’ll still be around the transportation circles. My columns for @rangemedia.co will be more land use focused, but I doubt I’ll be able to help myself from diving into transportation topics every now and again. 110
Lauren @lpangborn.bsky.social · 10/09/2026But there is hope! I’m joining at an inflection point, with the comp plan + land use map set for adoption in the coming months, + the dev code being overhauled. We have the opportunity with those 2 projects + others to change the trajectory from insolvent and vacant to thriving, safe, and healthy. 110
Lauren @lpangborn.bsky.social · 10/09/2026- Vacant and under utilized parcels litter the urban core and surrounding area. - Daily needs are largely only accessible via car, raising cost of living, pollution, and traffic violence. - Our infrastructure, being enormously spread out by unwise development codes, is not paying for itself. 110
Lauren @lpangborn.bsky.social · 10/09/2026So rather than being upset with my city that there isn’t better bike infrastructure, I am now upset that it’s made such grievous land use mistakes in the past several decades. These mistakes have had serious consequences: 110
Lauren @lpangborn.bsky.social · 10/09/2026I’m taking the well-tread path that starts with cycling for recreation, then for transportation, getting upset there isn’t more bike infrastructure, and finally, coming to the (now obvious!) realization that poor land use and development codes cannot be fixed with a great transportation system. 120
Lauren @lpangborn.bsky.social · 10/09/2026Some news: I’ve been appointed to Spokane’s Plan Commission. I’ve been involved in transportation advocacy at the city level for several years now, but I’m switching the focus of my advocacy to land use and development. 270

Lauren @lpangborn.bsky.social · 26/08/2026These changes are critical for resilience in a changing climate where fires increase in severity by targeting the growth of our city in non-WUI areas. Lauren @lpangborn.bsky.social · 25/08/2026All that to say: what are we doing? These camps are ecologically harmful in multiple ways. This isn’t me saying “homeless people scare me” so let’s put them in jail. It’s me saying “the fires and the trash in our river are real societal harms”, so what the hell are we going to do about it? 100
Lauren @lpangborn.bsky.social · 25/08/2026I’ve also been paddleboarding a fair bit recently, and I see many camps each time I go, regardless of where on the river I visit. The amount of trash that accumulates around those sites makes me think the trash cleanups done by the riverkeeper are mostly just picking up trash from homeless camps. 100
Lauren @lpangborn.bsky.social · 25/08/2026A fire was started in the river gorge today, not far from where I live. It happened in an area that is full of dry brush and trees.
