So, no women won Nobel science prizes this year, meaning the number of female winners remains at 26. How many of them can you name? Take the challenge here (I've seen one person say they got them all first try, which is very impressive). @nature.com www.nature.com/immersive/d4...

I don’t think everyone realizes how bad things are for US science: For the fiscal year that just ended, the Trump regime withheld $1.4 billion from the National Science Foundation’s research budget, which is about 1/5 of its primary research budget.

National Science Foundation Diverted $1.4 Billion in Science Funds Mandated by Congress (Gift Article)
The move, affecting about one-fifth of the National Science Foundation’s primary research budget, is the latest sign of how the White House is asserting more control over grants.

My first thought about this idiotic nightmare of newspeak is how it's going to affect academia, and whether we're about to see a rash of papers calling it "superintelligence" in a bid to get a drop of the ever-diminishing pool of government funding.

“All watched over by machines of loving grace” by Richard Brautigan, written in 1967.
All WATCHED OVER BY MACHWES OF LoViNg GRACE
by Richard Brautigan
I like to think (and the sooner the better!) of a cybernetic meadow where mammals and computors live together in mutually programmatic harmony
I like to think (right now, please!)
of a cybernetic
forest
filled with pines and electronics where deer stroll peacefully past computors
as if they were flowers
with spinning blossoms

I like to think! (it'has to be!)
of a cybernetic ecology
where we are free of our labor and joined back to nature, returned to our mammal brothers and sisters,
and all watched over by machines of loving grace.

The American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Academy of Family Physicians and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists suggest the vaccines for most people, including healthy adults ages 18 to 64 and healthy children ages 2 to 18, if their parents want them to get one.

A new dinosaur, Kayrasaurus changliensis, has been described from Chinese fossils. This early therizinosaur had tiny teeth, a long neck, and big claws, providing new information about this unusual group's evolution! 🧪 www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....
Life reconstruction of Jehol therizinosaurians, illustrating variation in body size, skeletal proportions and inferred ecological strategies among taxa. From bottom to top: L. sihedangensis is shown in a posture suggesting greater cursoriality; J. yixianensis is depicted engaging in lingual-assisted feeding, consistent with its robust hyoid apparatus; B. inexpectus exhibits a robust, less cursorial bauplan; and K. changliensis is reconstructed browsing on higher vegetation, reflecting its larger body size and inferred feeding strategy.

It really is striking how many authoritarian states have ended up in this exact same place, where the leader seizes control of scientific inquiry. Lysenkoism in the Soviet Union, Aryan Physics in the Third Reich, Great Leap Forward (also related to Lysenko) in China.
