Francis Collins led the mapping of the human genome, and chose to do big scientific to benefit the public. He is a a former NIH Director. He just resigned his position in government. His resignation letter: www.nytimes.com/2025/03/01/u...
Dr. Collins noted that when he was recruited to the institutes, and through many of the years that followed, “investment in medical research was seen as a high priority and a nonpolitical bipartisan effort — saving countless lives, relieving human suffering and contributing substantially to the U.S. economy.”

“N.I.H. is the largest supporter of biomedical research in the world,” he wrote. “It is the main piston of a biomedical discovery engine that is the envy of the globe. Yet it is not a household name. It should be.”

He went on: “When you hear about patients surviving stage 4 cancer because of immunotherapy, that was based on N.I.H. research over many decades. When you hear about sickle-cell disease being cured because of CRISPR gene editing, that was built on many years of research supported by N.I.H.”

Sharing these numbers because I wasn't aware of them myself. In the US: * 1 in 5 unvaccinated people who get measles are hospitalized * 1 in 20 children with measles get pneumonia * 1 to 3 in 1000 die If you're not immune, close contact with an infected person gives you measles 90% of the time

Others have said it better before, but: Doing the best science *requires* considering "DEIA principles and frameworks." Science is done by communities. Science affects communities. Communities are diverse. If you ignore that diversity, you are doing worse science than someone who includes it well.

One of the (multiple) things that struck me having read this, is the section that discusses the “value” of investing in non-linear reciprocal relationships. It reminded me very much of questions about how to “demonstrate the ROI” for communities of identity, circumstance, or practice.

One thing you should know about me: squirrels are a recurring theme! Every year, I wait to serendipitously find holiday cards that include a squirrel but I was starting to get worried that I hadn’t found any yet this year…Then a wander around a few local art stores today brought success!
A red squirrel with tufty ears, a very bushy tail, and a knitted red jumper is cross-country skiing from right to left across the snow. Snow is falling and behind the squirrel is a forest of pine trees. The picture was created by Maine artist Molly O Fedarko and features on a holiday card.

I loved Braiding Sweetgrass so I’m excited to be reading Robin Wall Kimmerer’s new book on reciprocity, The Serviceberry. I think in our idealizing of community, there might be yearning to be in this kind of reciprocal relationship with others we trust, participants in a gift economy of mutual care.
Photo of the cover of The Serviceberry by Robin Wall Kimmerer. A cedar waxwing bird with its wings spread holds a serviceberry in its beak. Another smaller waxwing flies in the background among the bright red berries and green leaves. Quote from Robin Wall Kimmerer’s book, The Serviceberry: “When I speak about reciprocity as a relationship, let me be clear. I don’t mean a bilateral exchange in which an obligation is incurred and can then be discharged with a reciprocal “payment”. I mean keeping the gift in motion in a way that is both and diffuses so that the gift does not accumulate and stagnate but keeps moving…”

Back in February, I teamed up with @bsky.app to make a comic explaining what makes Bluesky so special. I wanted to share this again, to welcome all the newskies. It's great to have you here 🙂 Welcome to Bluesky! 💙🦋 1/3
Multi panel comic. Skye and Jay observe a desolate expanse of social networks in their current state: bots, spam, scams… Throughout the page, the two take a boat away from the island, and land on a new island representing Bluesky. The tones are orange and purple. The following discussion ensues:

Panel 1: Skye: I think it’s time to leave Old Social. This keeps happening.

Panel 2: Skye: I have to start over again.

Panel 3: Skye: I'm tired.

Panel 4: Jay: Don’t worry! Better things are ahead at bluesky!

Panel 5: Skye: Jay, how's bluesky any different?

Panel 6: Jay: Well, we're here. Let me show you!

Panel 7: The labels display on a lively and dynamic esplanade: Welcome to bluesky! For you / Politics / News / Discover / Comics / Literature / Cat photos…
