Great post about how AI can make things much less efficient, despite the common narrative that it is automatically more efficient

If enough people think you’re funny, you can get away with a LOT. I’ve seen it over and over again. Guess this guy just isn’t that funny.

Don’t have much to say about the current comedy controversy that hasn’t already been said But that’s the thing, it was all said ten years ago, when people were defending comedians who harassed and stalked women, or told women they needed to get over the sexual assault. They still are. I’m tired.

Quite an important aspect of this story right there at the end of the piece: "He (Sir Mark Rowley) told the London Policing Board that Palantir's system would have allowed the Met to cut 500 jobs to help close a budget shortfall of £100m this year and £125m next year."

Definitely not you, it didn't even occur to me that you (or anyone) would think I was talking about you because that was so obviously not what you were saying and you were very clearly highlighting how awful he is, as was I. Thanks for understanding what I meant!

His motivations for talking about Israel the way he does have always been pretty clear. But if they weren't, they are now.

Fantastic interview with Ian Hislop on journalism and satire. I especially like how he keeps emphasising that being a journalist (or cartoonist) is skilled work, takes time and deserves to be paid properly. If we don't pay for journalism, we will get nothing but "content" youtu.be/TCOdomjE0dw?...

They just assume you're not really watching properly now. And sometimes they're right. This is why Severance really, really stood out for me. You can't fiddle about with your phone while you watch it. And nor did I ever want to, not at any point.

Something about the way R.E.M. write a bridge, it just elevates so many of their songs into something truly divine for me. World Leader Pretend, Driver 8, Old Man Kensey, Fall On Me, Shaking Through, Electrolite, West of the Fields... But ask me tomorrow and I'd probably have a different list!

Years of discrimination against the LGBTQIA+ community, continuing homophobia and transphobia, all coupled with ageism. Older LGBTQIA+ facing ongoing discrimination/ stereotyping/judgment. Things were meant to be better by now. Instead they just seem to go backwards. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
Adam Porter, a housing development manager from the LGBT Foundation charity, says he regularly meets older members of the community in exactly that situation.

"It's very common for people to hide things if they have a carer visiting their home, for example hiding their wedding photos or taking down a trans flag," he says.

"In the case of someone moving into a care environment, that means hiding who they are in their own home, for what could be the rest of their life."

Yes it really is! Lyrically, vocally, compositionally and (an incredibly competitive field for an R.E.M. song) possibly my favourite bridge (a close call between that and Driver 8)

Yes I'm never sure whether the chaos adds to the beauty or if it distracts me. Duality, contradiction, reaching out for connection then pulling back are themes over the whole album so the push-pull of styles does fit with that. Agree on the Wrong Child 💜 It still hits me in the guts on every listen

The track listing doesn't help it. Stand is great fun and I don't hate it at all but having it sandwiched between one of their most beautiful songs and one of their most brilliant is... a bold choice. I love Green but the sequencing is absolute chaos
