It’s 2026, it’s national deaf awareness week and this is what is published. The biomedical language throughout - generational curse? Very disappointed in the RNID - second time this year they have supported a campaign with such scaremongering about deafness www.theguardian.com/society/2026...

Janine Roebuck, from London, says she no longer considers herself deaf after double cochlear implants restored hearing

Someone on here compared AI produced material as "digital asbestos " which in a few decades' time we will have to work out how to eradicate from the fabric of research.

From my own academic research, even pre LLMs there was a huge danger of zombie factoids that begin in a respectable publication by mistake and then get reprinted for decades because no one is backtracing to the original source. Once bad info gets into the system it can take years to clear it out.

Imao it’s reasonable to assume that the AI transformation will bring no improvements to public services, but will be unbelievably lucrative for companies who can use it to get access to data and commodify and/or commercially exploit these data.

“Instead of helping people work, these policies [Medicaid Work Requirements] punish them for circumstances beyond their control. And rather than investing in job training or support, they impose harsh rules specifically designed to make getting health care harder.”

Good commentary on the recent "AI"-related troubles of this year's Worldcon. It remains a general rule that you should not trust Large Language Models to produce accurate information. They're not designed to produce accurate information. They're designed to produce statistically probable sentences.

This paper by @nisreenalwan.bsky.social and colleagues outlines the work required to live with long-term conditions. There are strong parallels with our ‘pathway to inequality’ which shows the impact of trying to manage when chronic illness is disbelieved. Read more here: tinyurl.com/3rd3hjxy
Pathway to inequality: a circular pathway. In the centre it says stigma, lack of trust and agency and no patient say in decision making. Around the outer pathway it says:
1. Disbelief and discrimination from medical professionals
1a. If you can afford it, move to private care
2. Unable to get adjustments in work or education
3. Unable to access benefits
4. Unable to access health and social care
5. Disbelief and isolation from family and friends
6. Negative impact on self-esteem and mental health
7. Having to fight for access to services
8. Worsening of symptoms
9. Avoidance of medical care
10. Start again with fewer resources and worse health
