If it doesn’t charge users and, so far, doesn’t serve them any ads, how does Duolingo make money? It tricks you into working as an unpaid translation service. At the end of some lessons, Duolingo will ask you if you want to practice by translating a real-world document. Which will turn out to be, say, a BuzzFeed article. By melding together enough stabs at this task from high-level Duolingo users, the app can render a surprisingly accurate translation. Which is worth good money. So far, Duolingo has contracts with BuzzFeed and CNN to translate stories from English into languages such as Spanish, French, and Portuguese. This service is already earning Duolingo hundreds of thousands of dollars a year, but von Ahn predicts he will be adding a raft of new clients soon. “The language translations market is huge,” he says. “It’s a $30 billion per year market.”

Marcel is the boldest, bossiest dude when it's just us but he's deeply terrified of strangers in our home. We had a new mattress and bed frame delivered today and he didn't come out from under the living room couch for an hour. He's still freaked out.

Some of the meanest and most evil people I've ever seen were so called mental health advocates or positive vibes people. They often ended being very ableist. They felt since they were such "nice people". They were allowed to lie and abuse others who are "bad" in their eyes.

No matter if Bluesky (or Cara, or your own website) puts something in place to tell scrapers not to scrape, be aware that most won’t honor that. Nightshade/Glaze your stuff. Don‘t upload high res. Just generally be aware that there is no save place and it will end up in the machine somehow.

TLDR: I scraped all of Cara, an anti-Al art platform! It was a fun project, happy to answer any questions here:)
Some statistics:
• Just over 12 million works in total
• ~12TB worth of images
• On average ~2.3 images per post
• Average image size, ~0.95MB
Total cost was just under $10 for the entire scrape.
Will release the list of URLs soon! I may soon have a way to remove Glaze/Nighshade, please join Discord if you would be willing to help! E.g. contribute your GPU to a pool to process images :)
To all you copyright trolls out there who will inevitably try to report this post, / am not distributing any image files!
Distributing URLs has been shown countless times not to infringe on copyright, take for example LAION-5B, etc.
