This is true! I saw a shoebill in a documentary once, before I knew what a shoebill was, and shoebills look creepy anyways but without context (I think the sound was off) it looked TOO much like video of a living dodo.

For Doctor Who to be “of its time,” it needs to have opinions. It always has. Gallifrey has always made the best villain, and now is the best time to highlight that. Also, the Doctor can be a true outsider & better critic of Earth. She can start without having already done and seen everything.

I would make the story about the Doctor trying to escape and undermine the Gallifreyan authorities, who can be cast as representing all the worst aspects of recent British history- xenophobia, soft colonialism, and rigid classism. Her character is already set up for that (hence the fugitive status).

You can change the setting, lower the stakes to something more relatable, mix up the formula, and not expect audiences to have to know any of the past 60 years of backstory, WITHOUT erasing any beloved canon. No time war, no Daleks, no Flux, no 2000 years of trauma, but also no erasing history.

I would make the new show about the “Fugitive Doctor,” Jo Martin’s Doctor. She‘s cut off from most of modern continuity because she’s an incarnation from before the show’s origins, who doesn’t share any memories with other Doctors. She can be written, then, as a new character without leaning on lore

Let me be the one to run Doctor Who for a couple of years. I know what to do. The show needs a break from recircling the same ground over and over. Whatever petty grievances audiences have with past showrunners, this is the unsolvable problem. How to make an old show feel new, without a hard reboot.

To be fair, eastern Canada media has been coddling the perception that these are real grievances the whole time. A BIG part of that is how few people they have on staff from out west. They sometimes call it “western alienation” as if Alberta and BC are the same, because they’ve never left Ontario.

update: per a hearing today Oscar Belgal was detained overnight in Elizabeth NJ and is now being held in Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn as his attorneys push for his release. he is still in pain and apparently has a bullet still in his body.
