all the people who are like "the middle class was better off in the 1950s" have not reckoned with the census data that says 33% of American households used chamber pots in 1950.

Visited my parents in their relatively rural part of Texas. I saw exactly one political lawn sign on any nearby properties. And that was a giant fence banner for the Democratic senator and governor candidates. First time I've thought the state Republicans might actually be doomed this cycle.

Welp. Received the first openly racist political campaign text I've seen. James Talarico apparently hates white people. I wish Texas Democrats were even half the threat to their ideals our local bigots imagine. It's hard to recreate Sherman's march while keeping one foot in your mouth at all times.

Legendary computer scientist Margaret Hamilton apparently died last week. I'm a little bit embarrassed that, notwithstanding her contributions to so much science and technology that I love, I particularly remember her as the subject of the sexiest photograph ever taken of a human being.
1969 photo of Margaret Hamilton and a printout of the Apollo Guidance Computer code. The stack of paper is as tall as her. Image taken from her Wikipedia page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Margaret_Hamilton_(software_engineer)

This is why neoliberals since the Washington Consensus have understood that free trade is economically good, not just because of comparative advantage, but also because it improves the political economy by removing one avenue for clientelism, forcing companies to instead make better products.

Dressing for bed and my undershirt tore in a way that would look extremely erotic on a lady but is just kind of goofy and uncomfortable on me.

I say this as someone who does not go out as much as I would like in part because babysitting is so expensive but the "affordability crisis" being the reaction of suddenly being asked to pay market wages for feminized labor but it's gig work and not gender equality, uh, has explanatory value.

I still read lots of reddit comments, and I feel like the average level of literacy has fallen steeply over the last year or two. Maybe I'm just becoming even grumpier, but it's hard not to wonder if I'm seeing the AI-driven cognitive decline in action.

One consequences of the left's hostility to economics is that they rally behind solutions that will probably make things worse. Economics is not the enemy of the left, and hasn't been for nearly half a century

He's okay. Just distressed." ZOE: "And the civilians?" DYLAN: "Only one. A woman on a bed. She's crying."

I always read the alt text on images and I find it fascinating how different artists describe their works. I definitely think there's an art to a good description, and I hope it's not detrimental to the accessibility purpose when the alt text gets whimsical.

I was uncharacteristically intrigued by the latest Fire Emblem because of the lady with the gun. But now that people are playing it I don't think I've seen any fanart or screenshots involving a lady with a gun.

The Brazilian elections suck so much. Lula was always kind of mediocre as a national leader, but he's really turned himself into a villain by tying his country's democratic future to his personal political success.

Work had me doing more AI interaction than I ever have before. Using Google Gemini, of all services, to kludge together spreadsheets for a bunch of information that has been getting horribly unwieldy into more integrated and useful forms. It seemed to work fine.

I went to a Chinese buffet Saturday. As usual they gave me a fortune cookie with my bill. But inside was missing any paper fortune. I sat a while staring at cookie shards and thinking about the weird traditions and expectations that exist around the institution of Chinese restaurants in my culture.

In the grand scheme of society, software patents are a substantially smaller problem than copyrights. But they are so much more viscerally upsetting and obviously stupid to anyone who spends the slightest amount of time interacting with them.

Is Madame Web a good movie?

No.

Should I see it?

You should see it immediately. Madame Web belongs in the Criterion Collection with a lengthy, labored essay justifying its inclusion. I would write it for free.

Predictably, I have been told that if German politicians do not want neo-Nazis to win elections, they should simply "address the concerns" of their voters. When asked for clarification, I am informed that the concerns in question are racism.

I think all cities should be built on giant stilts so that infrastructure can be easily laid and accessed without needing to dig. If the stilts are tall enough we could also make an awesome transportation layer while leaving streets walkable.

I find military history of very poor societies much more fascinating than wealthy ones. I think it's because conflicts in the rich world tend to hinge on boring organizational mastery. But poor countries are prone to "the battle turned after three guys in a garage got drunk and built a contraption".

I think Mayor Mamdani is mildly overrated, but would mostly prefer not to think about him or New York City politics at all. Anyone who wants to exclude him from 9/11 memorial events should be kicked in the teeth and shunned until they repent their bigotry.

if it took you 5 seconds of contemplation to think of an alternative you should take at least another 5-10 to at least consider the possibility that it at least crossed the minds of 1 or 2 of the people who dedicate their lives and research careers to dealing with the problems we post about on here
