Thanks Sara! Lots of great advice 😊 I've worked together with her for a few months already so at least we've been acquainted. But it's still different to suddenly be responsible for her future 😅

I love a good chrome manicure (especially when they can be used to support professional women like @cdelawalla.bsky.social ) 😎 I had this one done a few months ago 😊 Manicures do not reduce my ability to do science.

All things aside though, do your kids feel like they are English (or NZ/US)? We're a Dutch+German couple living close to Barcelona. I have no idea whether my kids will identify as d Dutch, German, Spanish, Catalan... Or all/none of the above... 🤷‍♀️

(I grew up in a country that doesn't really distinguish between England and the UK, so surely we can also just blatantly decide that any country that speaks some form of English is England...?)

Bleh. And being upfront about these prompts doesn't really work either because participants may then tell the LLM to ignore them, right? 🙄
100
Lorijn Zaadnoordijk @lorijn.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
But of course if it doesn't work very well, that still doesn't help.
110
Lorijn Zaadnoordijk @lorijn.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
Hm, why wouldn't they approve it? It's clear you want to acquire data from humans, not LLMs, so putting something in that doesn't bother actual participants but stops LLMs from trashing your data shouldn't be a concern from an ethics point of view?

Can you have some hidden prompt on your trial screens that is readable by Claude but not the participants?
200
Lorijn Zaadnoordijk @lorijn.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
Well, given that you have adults that can be instructed, I guess you could have an instruction half way through to stick their tongue out or something. But I guess even then they could still be looking at Claude doing the task.
200
Lorijn Zaadnoordijk @lorijn.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
Video-record your participants during the task via the webcam? (bonus: add some flickering screens or something so you can see that they are actually doing the task as you record them) 😬

That's true. I think I buy into that premise though. I don't have a well-defined stance on surrogacy and I'm in any case not averse, but I do think the service offered is qualitatively different from most others and very complex for all sorts of reasons. This needs to be taken into account.

Using phylogenetic comparative methods across 237 species from disparate phyla, the authors show that species with fast-paced ecologies have higher temporal resolution of perception.

How strongly will the theme be represented throughout the entire program? I've loved going to JPS before and Amsterdam is very appealing, but as an infant researcher I'm a little worried that this particular edition might not be for me...

We bought one too and as much as it is a decadent purchase, we were super happy with it! Didn't use it for the baby born in Spanish summer... Though I later occasionally thought it might be nice to bring it up (we still had it). Never did and now he's 2 years old.

Also, ons serious note, take a blanket (and a hat and a scarf), not a suit, especially for a drive that's more than 5 minutes. You need them properly covered outside but in the car it's usually fairly warm.

calling all researchers who collect data from humans 🧠🧪 we are running a very brief survey (<1 min) about jsPsych, the software ecosystem for browser-based data collection. if you use jsPsych, or if you collect data with any other software, please fill it out at tinyurl.com/jspsych-census!
I am writing on behalf of the leadership of jsPsych, the software ecosystem for browser-based data collection used in experiments and surveys from many labs worldwide.

It has been difficult for us to figure out how widespread jsPsych usage is, because the software is freely available online and we do not collect any information about downloads, users, experiments posted online, etc. While the software has been cited in thousands of articles, jsPsych usage is likely more widespread than those citations imply, because not every project using jsPsych leads to a citation, and because there are also often substantial delays between actual jsPsych usage and a publication. As such, we are conducting a very brief census of jsPsych users.

If you collect data from humans using jsPsych or any other type of software, we would appreciate your filling out a very brief survey (<1 min) at tinyurl.com/jspsych-census. This will help us to understand how many people, labs, and institutions are current or former users of jsPsych, information that will help support the long-term sustainability of the jsPsych ecosystem.

We would also appreciate it if you could circulate this message to your lab, your department listserv, and your collaborators, to help ensure that it reaches as many members of the research community as possible. The survey is being distributed by Josh de Leeuw, Melissa Kline Struhl, and myself. Please contact me (sam@auckland.ac.nz) off-list if you have any questions about it.
