Sue Looney - Math Consultant @looneymath.bsky.social · 24/10/2025Thanks for chatting and thinking about geometry. It’s often left until the end of the year but we can truly embrace geometric thinking every day as it connects to the world around us! In doing so children develop critical thinking skills that carry over into all areas of learning. 020
Sue Looney - Math Consultant @looneymath.bsky.social · 24/10/2025That discuss and explore piece brings in the language to talk about what children are discovering. 010
Sue Looney - Math Consultant @looneymath.bsky.social · 24/10/2025Very beautiful - kids often naturally design with symmetry which I find fascinating! 010

Sue Looney - Math Consultant @looneymath.bsky.social · 24/10/2025Love the connection to the face of a cube! 010
Sue Looney - Math Consultant @looneymath.bsky.social · 24/10/2025I agree - this is so important in developing a robust and deep understanding of a shape. 010
Sue Looney - Math Consultant @looneymath.bsky.social · 24/10/2025Activities that ask students to describe, to sort, to categorize, to compare and contrast all help move students to a deeper understanding of shape. 000
Sue Looney - Math Consultant @looneymath.bsky.social · 24/10/2025Love that! And when a student says things like this isn’t a triangle it is a clue to their level of understanding. They are attending to the shape visually and as a whole vs analyzing its attributes. They haven’t attained the next level of understanding which is descriptive. 010
Sue Looney - Math Consultant @looneymath.bsky.social · 24/10/2025A3 when we introduce the rectangle first and then the square as a SPECIAL rectangle because it has all equal sides it helps children Think categorically about these two shapes and to attend to their critical attributes. 000
Sue Looney - Math Consultant @looneymath.bsky.social · 24/10/2025Exploration and hands on manipulation is so important!! 010
Sue Looney - Math Consultant @looneymath.bsky.social · 24/10/2025We tend to fall either into the loved geometry or didn’t love geometry camp. Theres isn’t much middle ground there!! Interesting … it was the one math class I almost failed! 110

Sue Looney - Math Consultant @looneymath.bsky.social · 22/01/2025What are your celebrations today? Big or small win? Where are you seeing great ideas take hold? Sue Looney - Math Consultant @looneymath.bsky.social · 21/11/2024It was a game from their curriculum where they always started on 10 on a number path and then rolled dice and either added or subtracted their roll. Think the dice were supposed to be labeled differently. 🤪 But made for great discussions! 010
Sue Looney - Math Consultant @looneymath.bsky.social · 20/11/2024🎉🥳 Great day visiting 2nd gr. Student playing game - dice rolled and was to solve 10-12. He said what do I do? Teacher said “you lose your turn bc we aren’t doing negative numbers YET!” She did not say you can’t do 10-12. 🙌👏👏 Not limiting ss w/ math rules that expire #iteachmath #MtBos #ElemMathChat 1121

Sue Looney - Math Consultant @looneymath.bsky.social · 04/10/2024When we set up the hundreds chart - or in this case the 0-99 chart - like this we keep the decades together making it easier to see the repetitive pattern of 0-9. So all the 20s are together. All the 30s. Etc. we keep the full decade together in the row! #ElemMathChat 021
Sue Looney - Math Consultant @looneymath.bsky.social · 04/10/2024Love that! And what if we changed the number of columns? What patterns would emerge? Much like in choral counting. There is a purpose as to why these rows end in 9 and are colored as they are! #ElemMathChat #MTBoS 010
