Kids should help build the math environment, not just look at it.

That’s how we move from a teacher-decorated classroom to a classroom that says: “Our thinking lives here. Our math lives here. This room belongs to us.”

I also love using photos of objects from the children’s own environment—and then inviting students to find, photograph, count, and draw their own examples.

Stop rushing children from counting to memorizing. There is important mathematics in the middle: composing, decomposing, noticing relationships, and reasoning with what they know. THAT is where flexible fact fluency is built. #FactFluency #NumberSense #MathEducation #EarlyMath #HappyMathing

Quick subtraction tip: stop counting back. 9 minus 5? Ask "5 plus what makes 9?" Research shows kids who think addition get faster and more accurate on subtraction facts. Button Cat cards make the practice ridiculously cute. 🐱 #MathFactFluency #kindergarten #firstgrade #subtraction

Coaching is one of the few school improvement strategies with strong causal evidence behind it (Kraft et al. 2018): 49 SD on instructional practice .18 SD on student achievement. That's big. So if your school is doing Math Workshop, put this book in the hands of your admin team and your coaches.

Teachers who use AI weekly save 5.9 hours a week. Six weeks over a school year. (Walton/Gallup, n=2,232) But only 18% have ever received formal guidance on how to use it. We are handing people a tool and skipping the training. That’s backwards. #AIliteracy #ElemMath

5s are half of 10s. 6 x 10 = 60, so 6 x 5 = 30. 8 x 10 = 80, so 8 x 5 = 40. 9 x 10 = 90, so 9 x 5 = 45. One relationship just handed a child the entire 5s table. No chanting required.

Build Math Minds Episode 230 Assessment Is a Conversation Getting Kids to Share What They Know wi
If you want lifetime access to all the sessions from the FROM Memorization TO Thinking Summit, including this one, you can grab that at https://buildmathminds.com/thinking-summit/ I used to think assessment meant finding what my students didn't know - the wrong answers, the gaps, the "not yet." Dr. Nicki Newton flips that in this session from the FROM Memorization TO Thinking Summit. Her thoughts: assessment shouldn't be about catching what kids don't know. It's about listening for what they do know. In this episode, she shares the story of a 2nd grader who taught her more in one hand-written note than a worksheet ever could, the one question she now asks before starting any new unit, and three places an overwhelmed teacher can start this week. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ For more in-depth trainings on specific elementary math content, join the Build Math Minds PD site: https://buildmathminds.com/bmm/ The Build Math Minds PD site provides elementary educators with PD and resources to better understand the mathematics you need to teach, so that you can help your students become flexible thinkers in math. You can check out the other resources we have made to help build elementary kids’ math minds here: https://buildmathminds.com/shop/
