Imagine how pleased he was to have a photo of himself with the babby. From a glass plate negative in my collection, no date/info.

Settling in for another wild weekend at the Hardy Boy house 😸🐾
Two cats, litter mates, sitting together in a big, blanket strewn armchair. On the left is tabby cat Joe, and on the right is Frankie, a tabby with big white splotches. The are completely relaxed, and not even a little bit wild.

Nestled in the secluded mountains of Obanazawa, Yamagata Prefecture, Ginzan Onsen (literally "Silver Mountain Hot Spring") traces its origins to the early seventeenth century, when it flourished as a silver mining site during the Edo period.
Enfolded within a snow-bound mountain gorge at dusk, the multi-tiered wooden inns of Ginzan Onsen rise like luminous lanterns along the banks of the steam-wreathed Ginzan River. Heavy, pillowing drifts of fresh snow weigh upon dark tiled rooflines (kawara), balconies, and wooden eaves, while soft, swirling flakes fill the indigo twilight air. Cast-iron gas lamps lining the stone promenade emit a warm, golden radiance that glints upon the snow-slick bridges where travelers beneath dark umbrellas navigate the evening. Calligraphic wooden signboards (kanban) and paper-screened windows glow softly from within, framing the scene in rich chiaroscuro. The photograph evokes a deeply immersive sensory atmosphere: the sharp, freezing bite of mountain air mingling with thick, sulfurous plumes of geothermal steam rising from the riverbed, the soft crunch of snow and the rhythmic clatter of wooden clogs (geta) echoing off dark timber facades, the faint aroma of woodsmoke and hot mineral water, and the comforting contrast of golden gaslight against the icy mountain chill.
Following the decline of the mines and a disastrous flood in 1913 that destroyed much of the original settlement, local innkeepers rebuilt the village along both sides of the river during the late Taisho and early Showa eras (1910s–1930s). This reconstruction birthed the town's signature multi-storied wooden ryokan, constructed in a distinctive fusion of traditional Japanese timber joinery and subtle Western structural influences known as Taisho Roman. These historic four-story wooden structures, adorned with delicate kote-e (plaster relief carvings) and carved cedar balustrades, represent a landmark achievement in Japanese monozukuri (artisanal mastery and heritage woodworking). The installation of gas street lamps in the mid-twentieth century preserved the nostalgic, romantic atmosphere of a bygone era, establishing Ginzan Onsen as a monument to Japan's bathhouse culture and rural architectural heritage.

Merely abolishing frats isn't going to be enough without overall culture change at universities. My undergrad didn't have Greek life but ended up replicating a lot of the dynamics, to the point they had to turn one dorm floor into offices to stop alumni from coming back and egging on bad behavior.

Summer Scene at Mount Atago. . Ukiyo-e woodblock print. About 1800, Japan. Artist Utagawa Toyokuni I
Designed around 1800 by the master printmaker Utagawa Toyokuni I (1769–1825), this exquisite ukiyo-e woodblock print, titled Summer Scene at Mount Atago (Atagoyama Nōryō), captures three fashionable Edo women enjoying the refreshing breeze at the summit of Mount Atago. On the right, an elegant figure holds aloft a large, dark blue paper parasol that casts protective shade over the group. The central woman holds a vibrant crimson fan (ōgi), her fluid purple kimono decorated with delicate pine needle patterns (matsuba) over a bright red undergarment, while her companion on the left wears a blue kimono patterned with geometric motifs. All three sport stylish white head coverings (tenugui), perched comfortably before a rustic hilltop tea stall (chaya) equipped with shelves of ceramic cups. In the background, leafy summer trees frame a sweeping, elevated view of the Edo cityscape spreading toward the distant horizon. The composition evokes a lush atmosphere: the cool, uplifting mountain drafts sweeping up from Edo Bay, the soft rustle of unlined summer fabrics (hitoe), the crisp aroma of fresh green tea served at the summit rest house, the faint, humming chorus of cicadas, and the pleasant relief of stepping out of the blazing summer sun beneath the broad parasol.

Utagawa Toyokuni I was a titan of the Edo period art world whose versatile genius established the Utagawa school as the dominant force in late ukiyo-e printmaking. Renowned equally for his dramatic kabuki actor portraits (yakusha-e) and his refined pictures of beautiful women (bijinga), Toyokuni possessed an uncanny ability to capture the pinnacle of contemporary urban fashion and social poise. Mount Atago, famous for its formidable stone staircase (otokozaka) and panoramic vantage over the shogun's capital, was one of Edo's most celebrated scenic spots (meisho), drawing city dwellers during hot weather for nōryō—the cherished cultural practice of seeking relief from summer heat in elevated, breezy locations.

The tenth sheet from the set Joshoku kaiko tewaza kusa (Silkworm Culture: The Handiwork of Women), by Kitagawa Utamaro, c. 1798-1800, Japan.
In this dynamic woodblock print, four women collaborate in the exacting task of stretching and drying raw silk floss and reeled thread after processing. At the upper left, a woman reaches upward with bare arms to loop long, lustrous skeins of white silk over a elevated horizontal pole suspended above a deep wooden tub. In the foreground, two women lean into opposite directions, using synchronized physical tension to stretch a supple pad of wet silk floss (mawata) across wooden posts with paddles and tender hands. Nearby, another helper with a white cloth (tenugui) bound around her hair looks on attentively. The composition evokes a rich sensory atmosphere: the earthy, warm aroma of damp silk fibers and steamy wash water, the quiet rustle of patterned cotton kimonos, the gentle creak of wooden paddles against posts, the soft splash of water within cedar tubs, and the rhythmic, silent intimacy of women working in harmony.

Designed around 1798–1800 by the master printmaker Kitagawa Utamaro (1753–1806), this artwork represents sheet ten, titled "Stretching the Silk Floss" (Mawata-kaki), from his celebrated twelve-sheet polyptych series Jōshoku kaiko tewaza-kusa (Silkworm Culture: The Handiwork of Women). While instructional manuals detailing sericulture (kaiko-kō) were widespread in Edo-period Japan, Utamaro revolutionized the genre by populating the rural, labor-intensive process with idealized, fashionable beauties (bijinga). By portraying high-fashion Edo women performing arduous agricultural and textile tasks—such as picking mulberry leaves, boiling cocoons, reeling thread, and weaving—Utamaro celebrated the spirit of monozukuri (artisanal dedication, technical precision, and deep respect for raw materials) while transforming technical documentation into an icon of urban sophistication.
