The biggest mistake I’ve made when teaching Riichi was when I didn’t put the tiles in the hand of the prospective learner. One gains fuck all insight into mahjong by watching a game: get the learner tiles in hand first, and then you explain things. Almost nothing in mahjong makes intuitive sense.

It’s not a problem when you’re starting up because the first two rooms are well populated, but the moment you reach the Sun room in Riichi City you notice the cliff. But the time you have that sort of issue then you’ll know how to play anyways :D

Mahjong Soul has easily ten times the population. Unfortunately Riichi City, while it has a clearly better tutorial and continuous learning suite, has the disadvantage of having been released much later and, more importantly, of being really hard to stream due to the gratuitous nudity.

The demographics of the mah jongg gas have been clearly slanted to a specific group of people, but I’m sure the folks running the mahjong parlours would also want younger demographics to visit and keep the business going. If mama plays mah jongg and the children play more riichi that’s a double dip.

The opportunity seems there to infiltrate. The whole infrastructure can be recycled, and the same people have already learnt a game with 75% of the same structure. I don’t think we’re supplanting mah jongg any time soon, but making them coexist is a good idea, also to make the fad more sustainable.

In fact, it’s not a coincidence that the optimal way to play those online games, and thus the way they’re played at the highest levels, is in a LAN party-like environment, where you physically see your team mates around you and you know they’re there for you. Raging in front of your TV is unhealthy.

If you play mahjong online only, then due to the variance and the ability of a random player to completely blow up your plans you’ll get as salty as if it was LoL, OverWatch or Rocket League. The big advantage of mahjong is that you can play in person, where it’s easier to laugh with the others.

It was the same in the case of our main founder. He loved the game when he lived in Japan so he wanted to continue playing here. He started building something and COVID was a huge setback, but then he restarted once the lockdowns Finished. I was taught by him and stand on his shoulders so to say.

It's not just that we get people of all kinds in our little Cork, which I can guarantee you we do: it's also that it has let us build relationships with others. One thing that I like about Riichi Mahjong is that it has both enough online presence that you can get git gud through practice in front of a screen, but also, thanks to the tireless efforts of the founders of All Ireland Mahjong, people who smile at us and greets us by name when we come by.

One of her friends showed me a screenshot of @kemonomahjong.bsky.social and told me that that she had asked ChatGPT why she couldn’t win. The screenshot says “Need 1 Han”: she had no yaku. Obviously memorising the yaku needs more practice, but I’m glad i could share the joy of the game with them.

Two weeks ago this woman came to our mahjong meet-ups with her friends. They were entirely unannounced, so it was a (good) surprise to have them there. Two weeks later in her third time with us she hit me with a dealer mangan: Riichi + ippatsu + pinch + iipeikou. I’m really chuffed about this.

But it’s not simply “assigning them blame”. You will build the wall, which consists of 17 tiles face down, and then another 17 tiles on top of them. This is done for each of the 4 players. Once your guests are there, you determine the dealer (throwing dice, for example) and then the dealer throws the dice to see where the wall is broken.
