Hong Kong-Swedish bookseller-publisher Gui Minhai was abducted by Chinese forces in Phuket, Thailand, on October 17th, 2015. News of this took months to come to light -- and when it did, it was in the context of four of his colleagues as well as him having been "disappeared" by China.

Emily Lau and a number of other politicians standing under a bilingual sign whose English words read "Vanishing booksellers. Vanishing two systems" at a rally at Admiralty for the five Hong Kong booksellers "disappeared" by Beijing.

I snapped this photo on the march to the Liason Office in Sai Wan of a person holding up signs with the words "GREAT BRITAIN WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?" (in protest of the British government not holding its part of the Sino-British Joint Declaration that was supposed to guarantee "One country, two systems").

My giant set did come. Urbano did not notify me, it was left at the desk- Urbano is so weird. Worried about the tiny 4'10" woman who plays with us, tiles might be bigger than she is. Set was missing a blank, but that's fine.

With all the vibe coded shit these days, I'm glad 98UM, Samsho, and VF all have rollback, even if VF's is shit, so there's no need to AI slop those games. that said, I feel like I'm finally aging out and finding other stuff to do.

Grateful for my nasty stomach bug starting to lift today. Was worried about tomorrow. Still taking it easy tonight. Guzzling Horchata tea (Ecuadorian Horchata tea, not Mexican Horchata- two very different things!) helped.

One thing is for certain with the Mahjong Club for here , I do need a fully traditional Chinese set of tiles around for any Ecua-Chinese folks who are interested or any Chinese immigrants to here, I want Chinese folks to feel at home here too.

Eventually, my plan is to run a mahjong night for the local LGBTQ Center, and donate those sets (given import fees, this isn't cheap, $90/set) to them if there's interest, and use translated Chinese tiles for the local club.

I have nothing against American mahjong, but those $300-400 tilesets sold just annoy the hell out of me. Got nothing against special sets, hell, I use trans pride American sets for teaching ZJ, but sets that are tacky and overpriced are annoying.

Ecuadorian customs is so slow it's excruciating. Thankfully I have what I need right now to run the club, but if we grow I won't have enough sets. Ultimately if the 40mm set gets in reasonably well (apparently it's just under the 4x4 limit), I'd be able to shift to that for proper play.

Realized one more way a political existence hurts wealth- not knowing if you'd have to flee in a few years means you generally avoid home ownership, and perhaps lighten your posession load. This is not good for wealth creation, especially in USA.
